Cracked Nails

In the fall Norm cracked a toenail and it broke off. (We went for a walk on pavement and he pulled so hard it cracked.) Yesterday he was doing his crazy running around the house (on the carpet) and he cracked another one. Now I'm just waiting for him to break it off. He has been moping around since then so I know he's in pain. I keep his nails clipped so they aren't too long. Does it happen all the time to dogs or could it be a health issue?

I have never had one of ours do this. My first instinct was maybe they are too long, but you said they are not, so not sure what could be causing this.

I have not had this problem either, but I would trim off as much of the broken nail as could so it is less likely to catch on something.

I don't have any experience with this either but is it possible he has some sort of nail fungus that is making his nails brittle? Just a thought.
