Vanna has some on-going health concerns that require monitoring. She is hard of hearing, has had a herniated disk in her spine, and a history of mild allergies and ear infections. She requires prescription food to combat the allergies and ear drops to prevent infections. Since she is hard of hearing, we require a home with a fenced yard. She can hear very loud noises, but she startles easily due to her hearing loss.

Because of her history of aggression (although she has not bitten anyone), Vanna will not be placed in a home with small children or one where small children frequently visit. Dog-savvy, respectful teens who understand how to work with dominant dogs will be fine. Vanna does well with cats and other dogs, though she does not interact with them very much. Mostly she is content to laze about, looking beautiful.

Vanna is housebroken and crate trained, but must be kept on a schedule. She is sensitive to being wakened abruptly, having to go outside to potty, being left alone, bedtime/night time in general, and being put in her crate. She has improved dramatically with all of these things, but continues to have some sensitivity to night time. If she is allowed to settle down in her bed prior to bedtime potty time and crate time, she will sometimes snap at the person attempting to get her outside. When she snaps she does not bite; however, the snapping can be a little intimidating, which is why she needs a special pack leader who is not intimidated by her need for control. She will often refuse to go outside once she is settled in her bed, which is why she must be led outside and into crate by her harness. This can sometimes be improved by encouraging a short walk with her leash prior to bedtime to help motivate her. She becomes excited at the sight of her leash and will most of the time get out of her bed for that. When her owner leaves the home she may also become aggressive out of what seems to be separation anxiety, and she will sometimes snap at the person's feet. This behavior has also improved, but it has not been extinguished, and adopters should expect some regression.

We also believe that her being hearing impaired makes her somewhat more sensitive to changes and contributes to her need for control and structure. She also has some separation anxiety. She will sometimes bark when left in her crate, but this has improved as well. She is extremely head strong and requires diligence with any redirections. Here foster mom notes โ€œWe have worked diligently with her on these issues and it seems that she will just need a very strong leader to continue this work and love her despite her special needs. We want to be honest about her needs so that she can find the absolute right fit for her.โ€

Vanna prefers a home with a stay at home person. But she could be placed with a working family in the right circumstances as long as she got a mid-day break. It is possible that she could go to a quiet office. Beyond these requirements, she will do well in any type of house or apartment.
