French Bulldog Colors

Hi everyone.

I'm new and looking for information on colors for Frenchies. I really like the looks of Blues and Browns but I know there is some controversy with that. What I don't know is why. Does anyone own one of these colors? If so can you tell me about your experience with your frenchie? If you don't like them I want to hear about that too. I just want to get to know both sides and see what's best for me.

Hi, Madson, and welcome to FBN! All I know is from breeders of English Bulldogs. The blues and browns come from recessive genes and have been associated with skin sensitivities in some cases. Can't wait to see some pictures of Batman!

I have a male Brindle Frenchie... he is a great character and lots of personality and energy. He is a beauty with (knock wood) no skin issues to date

Thanks for the feedback. When you were breeding was it fairly common to see skin sensitivities in diluted colors? Do you know if there are any other recessive traits that I might also need to look out for?

I'm not saying all off color breeders are bad, and many times they can come from a receissive gene and be completely unexpected..... but most that breed rare colors are not looking to breed to the standard and could probably care less about health and temperament.... they just want to be able to make more money. Same as buying from a pet shop, backyard breeder or importer..... chances are you will get a puppy with health problems.... but not always.... but why support a business that causes so much pain for the owners who made the mistake. Most of these pups end up in rescues.

Hi Madson,

I have not bred any dogs myself, but have talked with breeders who breed for unusual colors. The other thing to watch for in the blues and browns is "butterfly" nose--when the nose doesn't fully color in black. The light color areas are more susceptible to skin cancer. Some browns and greys can have liver nose, same problem.
