ELROY HAS A BITE HISTORY

The handsome Elroy has made his way onto the available page! Elroy had previously been adopted from FBRN and was returned after showing signs of aggression that had escalated over time. This was due to the fact that he didn’t have firm leaders, and he knew that he could be sneaky and get away with things and break the rules. Now that this reformed bad boy has some rules and boundaries in place that are enforced all the time, there have been no problems! Elroy is a charmer and we don't want his naughty streak to overshadow his essential happy and cheerful nature, but as always, we provide as much information as we have so our applicants can make informed choices.

Elroy has had an incident in his previous home during which he became overexcited and started jumping at a visitor's hands. Visitor put his hands in his pockets and Elroy jumped up and bit him through the fabric. There was a minor amount of broken skin and bleeding. This wasn’t a puncture wound, but more as though the teeth scraped the skin on contact and caused the wound. Training Elroy to sit and wait or putting him in a crate or a separate room when there is excitement in the house would be a good way to limit his exuberance.

While Elroy is generally healthy, he suffers from the bane of Frenchies--allergies. Elroy has skin allergies and finds himself eating a LID (limited ingredient diet) but still has some allergy outbreaks at times. He may benefit from a raw diet if his new owners are willing to try serving him one! It is thought that many of his allergies are environmental in nature, so a change in geographic location from Iowa to, say, New England or Arizona might do him good. He is currently on generic Atopica and generic Zyrtec which seem to help with the itchies. Elroy will need frequent bathing, at least once a week, with a medicated shampoo and his ears will need to be monitored and cleaned at bath time. He does have some hair loss in his facial area and the skin is somewhat grayish in color.

Elroy seems to love everyone! He does great with the people he meets and did great with the children that he was previously around, but because of the bite, we won't place him in a home with children or where children are frequent visitors. Elroy doesn’t mind other dogs, it’s just the pushy dominant males that Elroy isn’t fond of. For this reason, it is recommended that any other dogs be submissive and there won’t be any problems with Elroy if the family is good about setting limits and creating structure and routine. Tell us about your experience with dogs who need extra guidance in your application.

Elroy is both crate trained and housebroken. He hasn’t had any accidents while in his foster home. He will sometimes cry/bark in his crate at night, but this is to let someone know that he must make a quick trip outside to do his business. After that he will come right back in and go back to bed! Elroy knows a few commands like sit, come, and stay. He is a smart little man, and we think that obedience training would be a great mental and physical stimulation for him and it's a great way to bond with a dog.

Any type of home--apartment, house, townhouse-- with firm leaders would be great for Elroy. No cats or small animals--he has a high prey drive. He has tried to chase and nip the cats in his foster home! Elroy wouldn’t mind any type of home and does fine with stairs. He would like owners who could let him out for a mid-day potty break. He currently doesn’t go more than 6-8 hours without going out and the same schedule would be just fine for him as well. Elroy might make a good office dog, as long as there was some way for him to be supervised while at work, like a baby gate on the office door or leashed walking around. He should do fine with meeting new people as long as he has structure and leadership in his life.
