About Chubby:
Chubby has a cleft palate that was surgically repaired 01.14.13, He has a slight cleft lip on his right side.

Chubby suffers from arthritis, hemivertebrae with IVDD, and is incontinent. He must remain on a grain free diet, Nature’s Farmacy supplements, Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet supplement, and have regular medicated baths. He must be carried up and down stairs and never be allowed to jump on or off furniture.

When he was adopted in 2015, it looked like Chubby had it made, but after a couple of years, congenital abnormalities and inflammation in his upper and lower spine began causing a wobbly back end, and prevented Chubby from being able to navigate stairs. These conditions also contributed to Chubby having toilet accidents in the house, and with 8-month-old twins starting to crawl in the home, Chubby's adopters felt that there might be an issue with hygiene, so they surrendered him back to FBRN.

Chubby is a spunky, chunky little ray of sunshine. His bliss is spending time with his humans, either napping on a lap, dispensing kisses, or following them from room to room. He actively seeks affection, and plays enthusiastically with toys. He even retrieves! Chubby thrives on praise, and needs reassurance that he is a good boy, even when he has an oopsie. Speaking of oopsies, these can be kept to a minimum if one sticks to a potty schedule and watches for his signals that he needs to go out. He is housebroken; he just gets caught short sometimes. Chubby is also crate trained, but does not particularly like being crated, probably because it forces him to be apart from his people.

Chubby does enjoy leashed walks ("Hey, I'm literally attached to my person! Woohoo!") but care should be taken not to allow him to overexert himself. He has breathing difficulties and limited mobility. Eventually, he may need a cart, and his forever family should be prepared for this possibility. Right now, however, he totters around just fine. He loves walks, loves car rides, loves to play, loves to move... heck, he just loves.

Chubby thinks that kids are A-Okay, and would be perfectly happy with either a single adopter, a couple, or a family, as long as he gets the attention and love he craves. Keeping in mind that Chubby needs regular potty breaks, a stay-at-home person or someone who can take him to the office every day would be best. Be forewarned -- if you take Chubby to the office, he might insist on making the rounds, attempting to convince your co-workers that they have nothing better to do than to pay attention to him. (He's very convincing.) If a stay-at-home person or an office gig are not in the cards, he might be okay with someone who works outside the home but can pop in (or hire someone to pop in) during the day to let him out to answer nature's call. Special-needs experience would be a plus. If you have cared for a dog with spinal issues, be sure to mention this in your application.

Chubby's history with cats is unknown, so we need to say no to kitties in his forever home, but he seems fine with other dogs. His previous owner reported that he showed some resource guarding at mealtime, but foster mom has not seen any evidence of this. Just to be safe, if there are other dogs in the home, they should be fed separately, and introductions should be slow. A house without stairs would be ideal, but if you do have stairs, explain how you will manage gating the stairs, and if you are up to the task of carrying him up and down. He would be delighted to have a fenced yard (he loves to explore), but it is not absolutely essential.

Foster Mom says, "Chubby is such a sweet boy. He doesn’t let his congenital spine issue slow him down. He is playful, he has a lot of love to give, and he has stolen my heart with his goofy personality and kisses. I can’t say enough good things about him. Whoever gets to adopt Chubby will be so lucky. Being his foster mom has been the most rewarding fostering experience I have had."

At 22 lb., Chubby is probably a little too large to fly, so he will need to be picked up in northwest Oregon and driven to his forever home. Depending on the distance, you should plan for a few pit stops along the way. FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo, so adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family.
