DiSalvo used to run with a pretty tough crowd—a pack of intact dogs left unsupervised in a yard. When a rumble broke out, Animal Control swooped in and took everyone to the hoosegow for disorderly conduct. We weren’t sure what we were getting into when we bailed DiSalvo out, but it turns out that this handsome boy is a lover, not a fighter, and is ready to walk the line to his forever home.

DiSalvo is a sweet, submissive guy who loves sunbaths and squeaky toys. If you put the two together, all the better—one of his favorite pastimes is taking his toys to the backyard and parading them about in the sunshine. When he tires of patrolling, DiSalvo enjoys lying down on the deck, where he chases sunbeams and keeps his paws crossed for a head scratch or belly rub.

DiSalvo also loves attention from his four-legged foster siblings and his people, and will paw repeatedly at his human companions when he wants a pet or a treat (His foster family has been trying to curb this habit, but visitors find it endearing and reward him for the behavior, so it’s been an uphill battle.) DiSalvo doesn’t much care for sitting in laps, but he does like to rest his head and chest on his people, and he won’t say no to a cuddle with one of the resident pooches. The only time DiSalvo has been snarky with other dogs is when they try to take one of his favorite toys, so it is important that playtime with other dogs be supervised.

This lovely pied boy is in generally good health (and a recent trip to the dentist left his mouth minty fresh), but he does have some ongoing medical issues. He has grade 2-3 luxating patellas (a.k.a. “trick knees”) in his hind legs, meaning that his kneecaps occasionally dislocate or move out of their normal location. The vet does not think surgery is warranted, but the bum knees have given DiSalvo a touch of arthritis. This means his forever family must be sure that DiSalvo takes glucosamine supplements on a regular basis and maintains a svelte figure, to avoid putting added pressure on his joints. For the same reason, DiSalvo would do best living and playing with dogs about his size or smaller, since larger dogs might knock him around a bit and put him at risk of injury.

DiSalvo also has some scarring and reduced vision in his left eye. Fortunately, the veterinary ophthalmologist reports that the eye is perfectly healthy otherwise—it has excellent tear production and does not cause DiSalvo any pain. So if you want to make goo-goo eyes at him, feel free—DiSalvo can see perfectly fine and will likely return the favor!

Finally, like many Frenchies, DiSalvo suffers from seasonal allergies. The recent sunshine (and resulting pollen bombs) have made him itchy, which in turn has caused him to start licking his feet. His foster family regularly cleans his feet and belly with hypo-allergenic baby wipes, and this seems to help. A continued grain-free diet should also help DiSalvo conquer the springtime itchies.

The perfect home for DiSalvo would be one with lots of places to sunbathe, but not lots of stairs. He doesn’t quite understand the concept of stairs, and they aren’t great for his knees. Plus, while some dogs can simply be carried up a flight or two, DiSalvo does not like being picked up and will hunker down if you try to lift him. (He also weighs in at an impressive 33 pounds, which is a lot of Frenchie to be hauling up steep slopes!) He doesn’t need tons of exercise—a short walk in the morning followed by some playtime in the afternoon should suffice. Since he’s such a mellow guy, DiSalvo would be fine staying at home while you go to work (with a midday break, of course), but since he loves meeting new people and isn’t an excessive barker, it’s likely that he’d be a fantastic office dog as well.

DiSalvo is housebroken and crate trained, but since he doesn’t give any signals when he needs to use the facilities, it’s important that he be kept on a regular potty schedule. He knows to come when called and to sit on command, and because he loves treats and aims to please, he is a great candidate for obedience school.

Last but not least, potential adopters should be aware that DiSalvo is a notorious thief and destroyer of remote controls and video game controllers. It’s not clear whether he thinks they are toys or whether he is dissatisfied with his foster family’s Netflix choices, but in any event, controls of all types must be stored well out of his reach, so we are asking that he go to a home with older kids who can be trusted to put their controls and whatnot out of his reach consistently.
