New member here with our Frenchie, Bella. Looking for some insight into reoccurring UTI's. Her latest culture came back with bacteria and vet wants another $625 to do more testing and then send her to a specialist. Supposedly her vulva is hooded and exposed more than most. Then just yesterday he said the fat between her butt and vulva is too puffy, causing her to have moisture build up in that area. Kinda feel like he is always leaning towards surgery and she's only 8 month old! First time we saw him he mentioned flaring her nostrils without experiencing any breathing complaints. Seriously contemplating a holistic Dr. Anyone have any input on this issue?

Welcome!

Did your vet put her on antibiotics for treating the UTI?
Is it actually a Urinary Tract Infection or is it inflammation in the urinary tract??

Did they Rule out Crystals and stones in the bladder??

Does she drink much water?
Does she pee often enough?

If she doesn’t pee often enough, that can cause the UTIs.

That vet sound like he is just thinking on the $$$$.

Female dogs are way more likely to get UTIs as they are very close to the ground, so there is more bacteria to go up in there, especially with long grass.
My other dog that I currently have, she is a female and is not as close to the ground as my other dog we had, she got So many UTIs cause she was so close to the ground, then I put her on Pet Well-being Urinary Gold supplement which is holistic vet formulated, that treated her last UTI and she didn’t need the antibiotics.

Then I put her on Four Leaf Rover brand Red Rover berry blend, which has been very helpful for preventative so she doesn’t get any more UTI. It worked great for her.

I give it to Rusty my Frenchie for tear stains and cause what had urinary crystals as a pup, this supplement Red Rover from Four Leaf Rover brand has completely stopped all those bladder issues and the tear stains.
I recommend you try that for preventative of new UTI and for maintenance.

If she actually has a UTI(infection) then maybe try the Pet Well-being Urinary Gold.

Keep her drinking enough water or feed high moisture food(raw diet is best) and let her outside more frequently.

It wouldn’t hurt to go to a holistic vet.

She should also be on probiotics if she has been on antibiotics as the immune system good bacteria has been destroyed from antibiotics, if giving antibiotics definitely consider probiotics. And even for preventative, probiotics help the immune system.

Regarding the nostrils, even if your dog isn’t experiencing the airway issues, it’s best to have the nostrils and airways open as much as possible so they can continue to breathe properly without issues, that’s a preventative.

Thank you Rustys owner! Very informative response. They just gave her two weeks worth of antibiotics. I'm not a big fan of the antibiotics but to kick it out this time we will finish them off. He is always very vague as to what type of UTI and states that the $625 test would tell what type of bacteria is present. So going forward, we will be trying what you recommended and visiting a holistic vet.

For the culture test, each time she gets a UTI it could be different so if you seen the vet again for another UTI they will again suggest a culture each time to check which bacteria, but most likely the vet will suggest the culture every time she has a UTI. It’s optional though, and very expensive to do that.

I would recommend getting her started on the Four Leaf Rover Red Rover supplement for preventative Before the antibiotics are done so it will lessen bacteria that will cause another UTI.
