Honey just went blind this week

When I got Honey as a rescue a few years ago, she was blind in one eye from scarring from a previous dog fight. Sadly, she just became completely blind this week. I took her to a vet opthalmologist and he said she has become blind in the other eye due to glaucoma. He put her on 2 glaucoma eye drops and a lubricant drop, and I have to revisit next week to get the pressure checked. The drops are to keep the pressure down so she won't be in pain, but he said it's extremely unlikely she will ever see again. What's even worse is that Honey is deaf in one ear on the same side due to that same previous dog fight and subsequent ear infection so she doesn't always hear me.

So far I have moved furniture around to keep pathways clear, and blocked off the stairways so Honey can't fall down the stairs. I have put a rug in front of the back patio door and front door, and a mat under her food and water bowls so that she can feel the textures as she reaches these areas. She seems to bang a lot into walls, but is gradually getting better at navigating the house.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for helping Honey transition in this difficult time for her?

    Thanks in advance everybody!!

Sweet girl!! So very sorry this has happened.

There are thinks called ‘halos’ that attach to a color or harness and helps them to know when they are about to walk into something

Thanks for the support ! She's a great dog and I'll do whatever it takes to make her secure and comfortable.

Poor thing! Uma also went blind just recently so we're learning how to deal with it. She's never been a timid dog so she's adjusting very well. I don't think she'll need a halo as she moves around pretty slow but keeping her calm while playing with Wally is tough. We have blocked the stairs so she doesn't tumble and we're not moving anything around so she can memorized where everything is. She has an app't with her eye specialist this week. I'm also getting a blind dog bandana made for her for walks so people know not to approach her without asking.

Sorry to hear about Uma. Was it from glaucoma? I feel bad that my dog was suffering, by the time she went blind she was squinting as well and her eye was all bloodshot. After a few days of the glaucoma drops she seems more comfortable.

So sorry to hear this. But don't get caught up in feeling bad for her, she'll adjust and with a few precautions (like blocking the stairs which you've already done), she'll be just fine. I know a rescue Frenchie who had to have both of her eyes surgically removed because they had both become basically giant open ulcers due to neglect, and she is happy and fun loving and hasn't "suffered" from being blind. She still enjoys life to the fullest, she has learned the layout of her house (so not moving the furniture is another great suggestion) and still plays with her bully brother. The best thing you can do for her is keep your mood positive, they can tell when we are worried or apprehensive. Good luck Honey!

Her retina detached and there's nothing more we can do for her but at least she's not in any pain. She's learning to get around without much sight and still hasn't slowed down all that much. Uma's on the same drops to keep glaucoma at bay.

Well that is too sad; fortunately she has you to make sure she stays safe. Dogs are amazing at adjusting to adverse conditions.

Just had a follow up visit to the opthalmologist vet tonight. Prognosis long term doesn't sound too good for Honey or any dog with severe glaucoma. Honey still hasn't regained any of her eye sight in the eye with glaucoma, so they don't expect her to. The drops aren't expected to work long term many years out, and she will need eye pressure monitoring every 2-3 months. Eventually she will probably need an injection to scar up the eye which will possibly eliminate need for glaucoma drops , or removal of eye, and choice will be left up to me. They said I can have eye removed right now if I want, but I would prefer Honey to keep the eye as long as possible.

I saw a really nice looking English bulldog at the vet and asked the owner what happened, and the owner replied that her dog ate something bad.

I know a bulldog on FB, friend in CA, Elsa... both her eyes had to be removed due to previous owner not caring for infection... Else adjusted wonderfully.

Sending lots of prayers for Honey
