Ok normally I'm the one giving advice but I have a CRAZY puppy when it comes to cutting nails. I tried to dremel, no go. Try to trim with clippers no go. Even with 2 of us we can't get him to hold still!!! Any suggestions? Benadryl maybe? I hate to DRUG my puppy but I can't cut his nails!

What about bringing in him to Petsmart or Petco and have them do it? I usually take Jax to Petsmart to get his nails done.

I have the people at daycare do it for me, but I was reading an article the other day that suggested giving your puppy some peanut butter to lick while you're trimming. I think it was suggested that the ideal scenario would be one where you had a second person holding the dog and the plate with the peanut butter while you do the trimming. No idea if that would actually work or not.

I tried giving him food....he still was fighting us..... I'm gonna have to take to Petco or Petsmart and then go shop and come back......I don't like letting someone else do it, but he's NUTS!

Julie, I'm in the same boat with Q-Roux. I'm anxious to hear any advice. I've been taking her to a groomer to pay $10 + tip every 2 weeks, but feel like this is something I should/could be doing myself. I tried peanut butter and slowly feeding her treats, but she continued to be a squirmy wormy or inhaling the food to get back to giving me her full attention of obnoxiousness.

XoXo from Quella La Roux and her mommy too!

I called my vet.....they will do it for $16.50 but they want to CUT and I prefer the dremel. You don't hit the quick as easily.....so I'm looking for a groomer that will dremel for me.....OR I may just try some benedryl.....but the stinker may have to go to a groomer to get done. UGH!

I clip and file Bear's nails while he's asleep. Lol.

It's basically like this:

*snip*
/he rolls back his head and looks at me for a second
/back to snoring

*wait a minute and watch my movie*

*file file file*
/snort /blink /zzz

Repeat 9 times.
Lol.

LOL - Yeah I was thinking I might be able to do a couple nails a night while he's sleeping and maybe a week later might have them all cut. LOL I much prefer to do it myself. I don't trust others to do it. I know they will hit his quick and I don't want my baby hurt. As much as he squirms they will hit it I know it. But if I can sneek in one or two a night while he's napping....that might work. :) Thanks!

Lol it really does work. But he has to be in the Frenchie coma-style sleep :p

What is this Frenchie coma everyone speaks of? I've never been able to hold Q in my arms when she sleeps, even at 8 weeks. If I even adjust myself on a couch, chair or bed, she perks up wide awake. I also try to bring her from a snooze on her beg to the couch with me for a cuddle and she turns in to coocoo for coco puffs and running and jumping all over then back to her bed she goes for pretty much annoying me. And when I awake to roll over in the middle of the night, when I glance up, her eyes are staring at me. I even gave her Benadryl for her itchy undercarriage today and she didn't come close to appearing groggy nor fell asleep.

Gosh how funny. Such variety within the breed. When Bear sleeps he is essentially unconscious. We can lift him up, set him down, change his position, play with his face, tickle his feet, etc. and he only ever sighs, rolls over or snorts at us. Lol. He's like a drunken piglet.

That is funny - - lulu always wants to be on me, eating a bone on me, sleeping on me... I tried allowing her to sleep in bed and she just is too close and on top of me, and gets irritated when I move and she can't get comfortable on me again! I wake up with wheezing noises coming from my armpit, which apparently is her favorite place to be! Nope, she's heading back to crate city for a little while! I'm exhausted! Karla

Petsmart or petco. They'll be able to dremel them for you and honestly they tend to do a better job than the vet (shorter/smoother). Some dogs just do better having a stranger do their nails. One of our dogs hates letting me do his nails but hes perfect at Petsmart.

As for doing them yourself, with Rootbeer I started dremeling his nails from day 1. He hated it. I had my husband hold him and talk to him and gave him treats and a break in between each paw. After a few times he is now PERFECT! He'll sit in my lap and watch tv while I do them. Thats really all you can do is try and try and reward good behavior so he associates good things with having his nails done. It doesnt always work though. Like I said before one of our dogs just really doesnt like US doing his nails, its a whole production so sometimes its easier to just pay someone else to do it.

Wow - your sleeping routine sounds like mine Karla! Puppy in my armpit or wrapped around my neck and mommy is totally UNCOMFORTABLE....I put up with it as long as I can and then I have to move him. I always feel bad, but mommy has to sleep too! LOL

Lol last night Bear draped himself across my husband's neck and sighed. Lol. We were laughing so hard. No matter how often we scoot him to the end of the bed, he always wedges his way in between us and makes 'complaining' noises until we submit. Haha.

Haha Hudson was kind of like this for a while. Now at 8 months he does the Frenchie coma... Might come with time!

As far as nail clipping goes, Hudson has always been a saint about it, but I have heard people recommend doing 1 nail per day and praising like crazy after. Apparently the dog associates it with being quick and lots of treats and a lot of them eventually adjust to getting them all done at once.

Omg I thought I was the only one!! Hudson seems to only be able to sleep in bed if he's on my face or head or draped over me in some way. Sooo not comfortable but he's so cute I just can't bear to move him.

Ok Lori - YOU ROCK! I waited till Batty was good and alseep and guess what? I was able to clip all 20 toes!!!! He was OUT! No fighting at all. It was GREAT! Thanks for the tip! Worked like a charm. I had to crawl under the dinning room table on my hand and knees and have Tom hold a flashlight so I could see what I was doing, but hey a mommy has to do what a mommy has to do right? LOL

Yeah my knees and back were not happy....but I prefer to not put my baby in the hands of others if I can avoid it. I prefer to take the pain myself and crawl under tables if needed. LOL Yes I was laughing too! LOL
