My Frenchie is Super Uninterested! Help!

Hear me out:

My frenchie, Nova, is 9 months old and has been in a cone for more than 2 of them. She has a repeating eye ulcer that will not go away. I'm in the process of going to an actual dog eye clinic because the vet just gives me tubes and drops that obviously aren't working. She is very picky and she will not eat her food dry and any treats I give her are spit back out. She is my first puppy but has a sister (from my significant other) who is a pure bred 3 year old Collie.

Context out of the way, my adorable puppy Nova isn't interested in doing much because she has lived in a cone for nearly a third of her entire life. She will not play with toys or her sister, and she is only willing to train when she wants to. She knows some cool commands and when she does them, she doesn't even take her reward (she was much more active and interested in the early months)! Even her own food isn't a good enough reward when she's hungry! She has very low energy most of the time, and only on rare occasions does she run around.

Seeing other stereotypical videos about Frenchie's has me puzzled as to why Nova is so cute but soooo uninterested in anything. I am simply blaming it on the cone but I do my very best to keep her entertained. I know it's partly because of the ucler and her personality but I want her to have fun! All she does is eat, sleep, cuddle, and repeat. I've followed many videos on how to train a dog to like toys but nothing seems to work. The closest thing I've gotten to success is her eating a greenie bar instead of her nyla bones...

Anyways, I'm asking for help on how to get her more engaged when she doesn't want any treats or toys. Do I simply wait until the ucler passes? She also has a problem with vomiting while eating her food. I have tried 3 different slow feeding bowls with no success. But that's a different question.

Thanks!

I would definitely see a specialist. She could be in pain.

I was thinking the same thing... if she is in pain she will not be interested in anything. I’d get her to the specialist to get her eye exam

Poor thing sorry this is happening to her. Let us know if the specialist comes up with any answers for you.

Get her out of the cone of shame. If she paws at her eye, then us a soft cone. We have had bulldogs that had eye surgery and iur vet never put them in a cone. She is a pup and needs to play and have plenty of attention. Hopefully this will help.

Any update? Hopefully you were able to take her to an eye specialist.

Yes! I thought I responded to this thread but I didn't! It has been months now and Nova is doing better. It has been an interesting ride:

TL;DR:
Vet diagnosed the ulcer, but misdiagnosed the gunk in her eye afterwards as an ulcer. Cone of shame was on for no reason, and she was finally prescribed the right medication for dry eye (because of an underdeveloped tear duct) and she has been doing better. She is still a very mellow dog though as she refuses to play with toys and doesn't accept treats even before eating. She is still very obedient to commands but I guess just doesn't want to be rewarded (it's difficult to teach her new things at the moment because of this). All she still does is eat, sleep, shed, and repeat if she's indoors.

The first visit when I took her to the eye specialist (of course it was on a day where it wasn't all gunky with crud so I had to show pictures), they did a whole book-load of tests and basically prescribed her a steroid and a type of eye drop twice a day. They concluded it to be dry eye as her left tear duct was never fully developed, possibly because of genetics and/or the ulcer she had. You can physically tell she had an ulcer because there is a scratch in her eye and the entire eye is cloudier than the other. Anyways, they said there was no need for the cone and she could be free!

After a few weeks I came back in to see the eye specialist again for a checkup, where I was happy to report there was no gunky stuff in her eye until the day before the appointment. She normally always has gunky stuff but the meds always washed it out so it was on her eyelid instead. Anyways, they took her off the steroid so I am only using the drops to this day.

Throughout the entire time and even to this day though, her attitude remains the same as it was with the cone, at least inside. She is very, very, very chill. For her one year birthday I took her to be groomed and the groomers were so happy to take care of her since she just doesn't give a hoot. However, she does get active on certain outside occasions like when I took her to the dog park where she turned into a puppy eating demon and tried to bite every single dog around (a problem I believe I can work on but has never been seen because covid). Also after any bathroom breaks she will gallop over the grass. But once inside, if you don't let her back onto her bed, she will literally sit on the floor and will not move for HOURS unless you tell her to move. She is incredibly obedient to commands (at least to me) but doesn't like to be rewarded for her actions, even before eating. She will still never play with toys either. All she wants to do indoors is eat, drink, and sleep.

I'd also like to mention that Nova is now 14 months old and only weighs 11 pounds. This is not a joke, she is EXTREMELY small. She is not malnourished in any way, but she was the runt and I was told that her mom and dad were considered to be on the smaller side as well.

Overall, I'm glad that she is not in a cone and is able to blink out the gunk caused by dry eye. I am still slightly concerned about her behavior indoors as being almost too chill. Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy it quite a bit, but I don't know if it's just her personality or not. The best way I can put it is that while she's inside, she's much more cat than dog.

Sorry for spelling and grammar!

She's adorable!
Good to hear that the eye specialist has been helpful and she seems to be in good health!
I wish I could help but I'm so new to dog ownership/ training that I'm doing nothing but learning myself (hence why I read posts like these).
Any feedback or confirmation from any vet regarding if there's still signs of pain? How's her breathing capability?
I notice Frankie's energy drops severely when pollen or wildfire smoke hurts his breathing ability.

Happy you have her eye all healed up!

Engagement... my guy will only play if WE play with him.. does not entertain himself at all.

Frozen Peanut butter bones are a favorite and keep busy for awhile

Thank you! I haven't gotten confirmation yet regarding pain. I'm going back to the eye specialist again soon to do a checkup so I will ask then. She breathes pretty well since her nostrils are a bit more open than average, but she loves to snore. The heat is also pretty scary too if she's outside too long here in Texas. But when she's outside is when she tends to be more active, so she will begin to pant reletively quickly.

Was very glad to read the update on her eye - what a journey. No advice on the not-wanting-to-play thing. I can imagine how bizarre it must be to have a young dog that is so calm. Can she lend some of that temperament to mine? Haha....
