Hello, Iā€™m desperate for answers and opinions on what my 1.5 year old frenchie Harley might be dealing with.

tl:dr: Spayed frenchie leaves little urine spots on everything she sits on, vet thought she had a UTI and gave her antibiotics, but she still has the issue and vet wants to put her on Proin.

She was spayed a year ago (at a little more than six months old) and while potty training took a long time to ā€œmasterā€, she has developed this little issue that has been going on for about the last six months.

She spots. Her little vulva is like an eye dropper that leaves a small urine smelling spot on everything she sits on. She doesnā€™t ever pee on things, she just leaves little spots everywhere that grow bigger the longer she sits there. Iā€™ve had to start putting a diaper on her at night so she doesnā€™t spot on the bed.

Weā€™ve been to the vet a couple times. About three weeks ago she had a urine extraction done and they said she had a UTI. We gave her Clavamox for 2 weeks and then did the test again and they said she just has the regular bacteria. This time the vet said he wants to try her on Proin to see how she responds to it. I've seen a lot of success stories with Proin, but I've also seen several horror stories about side effects like blindness, seizures, restlessness, breathing issues, etc... I can't seem to find any information on Frenchies taking Proin so I don't want to start it without finding something. I've been trying Leaks No More for about a week, but it's not working.

She doesnā€™t have any other signs of illness (no fever, normal thirst and appetite, she doesnā€™t pee in the house or struggle to pee outside...no blood or allergy symptoms) she just... spots. Weā€™ve been calling it a ā€œsploot.ā€
Sheā€™s such a great dog, mostly well behaved, smart, and easy to train. I just want to make sure Iā€™m doing the right things for her. Her diet consists of Nutrisource Pure Vita grain-free kibble and she gets a few other grain free treats when doing training.

Thanks for reading this far! :) Any thoughts?

Oh my goodness. I'm sorry you are going through this. Sounds really frustrating! It's awesome she has such a good family that wants to get to the bottom of it!

I'm sorry I do not have any experience with this particular health issue. I do have a friend that has a male Lab/Pitbull mix who recently had his spleen removed and was on Proin for several weeks. My friend took him off of it as it wasn't really helping. I believe she is having him wear a diaper and gives him CBD Oil. I can ask her for more details if you'd like and relay them here.

I hope someone here has some advice for you! Hang in there :)

Thank you for your kind words Hattie! Iā€™d love to hear anything you find out! I think my old beagle was on Proin about 8 years ago and it didnā€™t really help, but she was having other issues. Iā€™m just concerned about starting Harley (my frenchie) down this oath if there are other solutions.

I have no experience with this problem either. Do you live in an area where there are vet specialists? Like a urologist? Wishing the best for you and your girl.

Ok, so I emailed her and she wrote back right away and said she took him off Proin because it affected his appetite (he already was a picky eater) and upset his stomach too much. She still has him on CBD Oil, but I personally don't know too much about it. But I know several people who use it and give rave reviews.

I hope this issue is resolved quickly and you find the answers you need!

I don't have any personal experience with this issue with my dog, but just from reading I'd try the Proin (phenylpropanolamine) and see if that helped. If not,I'd try estriol ( Incurin ) and if that didn't help, put dog on both drugs. If still having issues after taking both drugs, I'd take her to a surgeon who could try collagen or bulking injections around the urethral sphincter, surgical implantation of a urethral occluder and certain bladder and urethral tacking surgeries. Thank you Alice! There may be some specialists I can speak with and the vet recommended it if he medication doesnā€™t help.

Thank you again Hattie! I might just be overly concerned about the medication so Iā€™ll give it more consideration if some of the more natural methods donā€™t work. Iā€™m so glad there are forums like this to bring up these questions!

Thanks so much! Yes, Iā€™ve been reading quite a bit about these mediciations but could never find anything relating to frenchies. They do seem like good options so Iā€™ll be considering them.

Hey! Iā€™m kind of in the same situation. I bought our second Frenchie from a pet store. He was almost five month and they dropped the price nearly 98% so he could go home with a family. We had no intention of buying another Frenchie, especially from a pet store and not knowing exactly how they are breed but I felt like this poor pup needed to get out of there immediately. I noticed he was urinating constantly. Like a few times, minutes apart. Even dribbling. I thought maybe they spayed him too early because the breeder did it prior to sending him to the pet store to ensure he wouldnā€™t be used as a stud.I had to go through the pet stores vet to get treatment. If I hadnā€™t gone there, then the store wouldnā€™t be held liable for a clean bill of health. They said he had a uti and gave him so many antibiotics back to back. Finally after four rounds, they took a culture and determined he had crystals in his urine and he needed to be changed to a urinary diet. Iā€™m not sure why they didnā€™t do this the first or second time. This helped a little l but I think there is a bigger issue. They prescribed prion and this is day two and no accidents but my gut is telling me I shouldnā€™t be giving him this medications Iā€™m not familiar with which brought me to your thread. Heā€™s now 8 months old. I was wondering how your pup is doing? Did you continue to give prion? I am going to get a second opinion.
