Hello all,

I woke up tis morning to take Nellie out for her morning potty session. I walked into the backyard to realize that it was pouring out. But i still went ahead and put her down on the grass and told her to go potty and she freaked out and started climbing on me.. as in get me out of here!. So i quickly took her back in. She climbed up my neck and would't let go. she was shaking and whimpering. I calmed her down and waited until the rain subsided (an hour) and took her out again. The rain was almost gone but the ground was still very wet. She quickly peed and tried to climb onto me again. i brought her back inside still shaking and scared. I know most dogs are afraid of the rain but now she refuses to eat and has plastered herself onto me. I tried to feed her with my hands. she ate a bit but is refusing to eat even when i hand feed her. Is this normal? I had a german shepherd as a kid who's first experience in a thunder storm, had him hiding under my bed for 2 weeks! and refused to eat! i don't want the same thing to happen now lol. I am set to go for brunch in an hour and not sure if i should leave her. Any tips will be appreciated.

So just an update! I decided to go to the brunch and went t take a shower. The minute i left her she started whining and barking a lot. She never does that! Anyway, i came down after my shower and found that she had thrown up the little food that i had hand fed her, and pooped in her crate!! she has NEVER POOPED IN HER CRATE BEFORE. The door was open and i left her for all of 10 minutes. She has pee pads next to the crate for night time and often times uses it during the day too. so am so surprised she pooped and threw up in her crate when she could have just walked a few steps to do so. Also every time i walk away from her she starts to whine and bark. Could this be more than just fear of the rain? Could she have maybe eaten something in the yard? I also started transitioning her for the royal canon to fromm puppy gold. But up until last night she ate like a horse, and now nothing. She'll be 15 weeks tomorrow and still doesn't have her complete shots. Am trying not to worry, but this is very strange behaviour. She's also been itching a bit and sneezing over the last few days.

The itching and sneezing could be allergies.

I think the stress of the rain caused her to get an upset stomach. She seems like she's kinda in panic mode.

My girl never got terrified, just peed and refused to poop out in the rain. She would just stare at me probably thinking "well might as well take me back in the house..." Haha.

I'd give it a couple days with the apparent freak out she had, and if the symptoms get worse or any new symptoms appear or get worse I'd consult a vet. Better safe...

Just sit her next to you, or sit on the floor with her and tell her calmly she's fine and pet her head without her clinging to you. It seems like she's almost been induced into separation anxiety? She's a young pup, so she should recover fine.

I agree, she is still nervous from the rain and that is why she threw up. A lot of them don't like the rain, and they can get traumatized from it. Now she will probably always be scared of it. What we do is put them on the patio, which is covered and we go out there and call them so they will come on their own. It can take awhile and it usually gets better the older they get, but they will eventually go out there, unless it is really poring, then we wait a little while till it slows down.

Dexter also hates the rain. He'll do the toilet as close to the door as possible if it's wet outside. If it's really heavy, and I know he has to go, I go outside with him as David said. I dont walk him in the rain as there's just no point. He got a shock the first time he had to deal with snow!!!

Thanks all! It rained again yesterday and she had a similar issue. I waited till it subsided and took her out. She quickly peed and then jumped on top of me. I took her out a second time. She pooped and wanted to get out of there right away. I think she'll get used to it eventually. We live in Canada so am wondering how she'll handle a major snow fall here lol

I agree that the rain most likely traumatized her and her stomach got upset. Stella hates the rain too but loves fetch. So one day when it was raining I threw her ball outside in the rain to see if she would fetch it. I was shocked when she ran right after it and I threw it like 3 more times and she was fine. You will most likely have to go slow reintroducing her to rain.

She loves fetch too! the only problem is that my back door has very steep steps leading down to the back yard and she has yet to master the steps. So i often carry her and put her down at the bottom. She is pretty time for her age. She was very sick when we first got her so she can likely fall through the wooden step slits. i planned to get her some rain wear to see if it helps! Thanks for you tips :)

Radar also hates the rain, but he hated the coat I got him even more than the rain. It gets better with exposure to the rain and age. As she gets older it won't be nearly as traumatizing.
