Hey - 1st of all thanks for the add to the group. My frenchie is a 2.5 year old black brindle male named Tony. Lately he quit drinking water. Vet can’t find anything wrong after multiple visits, xray, ultrasound, and physical inspection. He pukes when he eats and convulses and pukes randomly. He poops very little. It was runny but lately it’s been solid but 1/2 the amount and he really works for it. No blockages found. He , overnight, quit drinking water. He's normally 2 cups a day on average. 30lb frenchie. Blood panel results back on Monday. Now today he ate some cat littler out of the litter box and looks bloated as heck and keeps lurching. Idk with this dog. He’s currently snoring. His demeanor, mannerisms, and zest for activity haven’t really changed. He’s a bit lazy tonight. Any help? Any thoughts ?

Welcome.

What are you feeding him??

What did the vet say? Does she have any ideas of what it could be??

Have you had his Soft Palate checked?? That can get too long and partially block the airway causing snoring and vomiting.

Are you taking him for walks and does he still play as usual??

I would give him high moisture high quality food(canned or raw or lightly cooked) because the moisture keeps him hydrated and they are less likely to get bloated, and even for my frenchie, he doesn’t like to drink any water, so i add a little water to his raw food which is also high in moisture.

If he is bloated, it’s definitely gonna cause him to be extra lazy.

He eats Earthborn kibble for small breeds and I mix that 50/50 with Earthborn kibble for small breeds. I give him almost 1 cup morning and almost 1 cup night. I want to change him to a raw food diet and my vet strongly recommends I do not do that. I clean his bowls for each meal. I serve kibble with some welactin fish oil in the morning with a slow feeder bowl. I feed him kibble with a small table spoon of pumpkin purée and probiotic at night. But for the past 5 days he’s been on a boiled hamburger and rice diet. He started looking bloated end of day Sunday. I got fish oil and probiotics from his vet btw.
I don’t know if they checked his soft palette. I’m going to call the minute they open today.

All vets are against high quality food, especially raw food or lightly cooked. There is so many myths about it.
And the vet knows a healthy dog on raw or lightly cooked won’t be seeing the vet for health issues!
They try to just promote their low quality stuff and they don’t get taught much on nutrition.

My dogs are all on raw and my vet doesn’t even know, but it’s fixed many health issues and made others manageable.

For the kibble your giving, have you tried using the canned food instead so that helps get extra moisture in him??

I would recommend i high quality probiotic(not the one from the vet as it’s lots of fillers and not many probiotics actually in it), some high quality brands for dog probiotics:

-Four Leaf Rover-I give Rusty the Protect probiotics for maintenance, they also have Gut Guard probiotic which does the same as Gut soothe from the adored beast brand.

-Adored Beast-Gut Soothe is great for vomiting or other digestion issues cause it’s got slippery elm and other gut soothing foods in the probiotic.

I would recommend to try one of these high quality probiotics instead of the one from the vet, cause the high quality ones are way more effective without causing other health issues. Same goes for the fish oil, try a better quality(Grizzly brand Pollock oil for example).

I would keep him on the hamburger and rice for now until you know More form the vet of what’s making him sick. And if your open to trying a high quality probiotic for him I highly recommend that instead of the vet one.

Hope he starts feeling better soon.

Keep us updated.

Ok. Blood panels are back and they say elevated lipase and something else. That , they say, is most likely pancreatitis. But she says those could be elevated due to vomiting. She didn’t show me the test results. Have him on canned food now rather than boiled hamburger and rice. It’s called canine hills I/D. Also have me cerenia pills to give him once per day for 4 days. And omerprazole/ metoclopramide (Prilosec) twice a day for 7 days. But we aren’t exactly sure it’s pancreatitis. The vet was out of pancreatitis test kits. Still not 100% sure. She says this is a 60% diagnosis between her and two other colleagues at the office. They want to do more testing and hospitalization and send our X-rays to a specialist and have more blood drawn. I said “ I’m good with this for now”. They also recommended “exploiting surgery” to pinpoint the problem. I didn’t think I was on board for surgery just to see what we can see. He’s home now with a sac of water under his hide and some hills rx diet canned food and resting. I will try the things you mentioned and I’m am going to do a raw food diet and see if that helps him.

I wonder if it’s a reaction to cytopoint shots ??? He just had his third shot. Gets one every 4-5 weeks. Seems like they aren’t as effective already.

It could be the pancreatitis, if they aren’t sure if it is or not, I would see if he improves if you give him something for the pancreatitis.

The hills vet food(and all the other vet food), is garbage and very inflammatory it has corn and by products(garbage) and wheat in it which all cause inflammation.

Do you have Natures Logic available to you???

They have a sardine formula, it’s low in fat and they have the canned formula too which is good for pancreatitis.
See if anyone has Natures Logic Sardine (canned and dry). That’s great for pancreatitis cause it’s low Carb and low fat. But raw is really good if you are open to it. I highly recommend raw if you are open to switching him to it. It’s great for allergies too. If you need kibble or canned the Natures Logic is best.

Rusty has had random pancreatitis flare ups(no one knows exactly why), when that has happened I give him a supplement called Four Leaf Rover brand- Digest product and he gets Protect probiotics too which help minimize the amount of flare ups he had for pancreatitis.
The digest product is digestive enzymes which really help with pancreatitis, I always have a jar on hand of that and within 24 hrs his symptoms are gone, but I continue that supplement for a couple days then discontinue.

It could be a reaction to the cytopoint injection, i also didn’t find it effective for my other dog, and since I know all the risks for Cytopoint and Apoquel and Atopica and Benadryl I don’t give any of those.

Rusty has allergies too(severe), and my other dog also has allergies, I give them raw diet and Bovine Colostrum powder supplement(I have used it for 2 years on my Frenchie Rusty and it works great-I get the Four Leaf Rover brand cause it seems more value for the $ and it lasts longer).

You give it 30 minutes BEFORE you give them breakfast, only the powder you put it in the dish and let them lick it up out of the dish(it’s best absorbed on empty stomach).

Works great for environmental allergies. And it’s way more effective than cytopoint and apoquel for my other dog(even with apoquel and cytopoint she had to wear the cone 24/7 cause she would scratch her ears and face and chew her paws until she couldn’t walk), now No cone and just the bovine colostrum powder and the raw food.

I’m not saying every dog it will work for but it’s worth a try!

I also recommend getting him off the vet food ASAP as it causes other health issues and more inflammation.

When he vomits what it in it , anything/. Just mucus or foam... any food or color to it? When they did the x-rays, did they do a barium x-ray? I ask because if there is a blockage x-rays and ultrasounds sometimes do not pick eveything up but the barium -ray has a better chance of doing so

Try feeding him ground beef, cooked medium, chopped up in very small pieces.
