So yesterday Hudson got bit by a wasp. It was very dramatic but I ended up giving him a Benadryl and icing it and he was fine.

I did notice, however, that after the Benadryl his eyes were looking better. His inner eyelid thing inside his eye has been very red lately and that redness seemed to go down with the Benadryl. He has not been otherwise uncomfortable.

Does the eye redness mean he has seasonal allergies? Should I be giving him Benadryl regularly? He isn't sneezing or itching or anything else.

I've been giving Danté benadryl almost since he's come home to help with his runny nose and it's worked wonders! The vet said he might be too young for allergies, but if it's working then it works. He recommended half a zyrtec once a day however, as it won't cause drowsiness.

I give 1 Benedryl to Cheli 2x a day to help with his runny eyes..... eye redness can totally be due to seasonal allergies

Hudson is almost 9 months. I live in a town that is notorious for causing horrendous allergies, even in people who have never had them before. So I'm thinking that might be it, though I'd assume he'd be sneezing or having runny eyes or itching. They're just red..

Okay great, thank you! I'm worried about constant Benadryl doses doing damage to his liver or the like. Is that a legitimate concern in dogs?

Thank you both!

I would think it is if you ae taking it every day for extended periods of time, but I only give it to my guys in spring/summer... fall is on occasion, but most late spring and all summer due to the grass allergies they have

Radar also has red eyes and no other symptoms. The vet told me that it was due to allergies and to try him out on Zyrtec. He is 28 pounds and 9 months old, so he gets the entire pill. It has definitely helped with the redness and hasn't slowed him down in the slightest.

Ah that makes sense. I guess I will only give it to him when it gets super bad.

Hudson is almost 9 months and under 25 pounds so I wonder how much he would get. The Zyrtec is a great idea. Thanks guys!!

If the red eyes don't bother him, and he is not scratching, then I wouldn't give the Benedryl, unless his eyes are running a lot.

They don't seem to bother him at all, no scratching. He does seem to have a lot of "eye boogers" but not the tear stain causing running of the eyes.

Regarding the Zyrtec (if you want to go that route), 0-15 lbs 5mg once a day, 16-39 lbs 10 mg (whole pill) once a day. According to the vet dogs process the medicine in Zyrtec better than humans do and not to get the version that deals with congestion.

Rootbeers eyes sometimes get red and extra watery but he doesn't seem bothered at all. The vet said its environmental allergies. We also live in an area where allergies can get really bad. I never had allergies until we moved here. We usually give him a Benadryl or Zyrtec when it happens and it helps.
