Hi Guys, I am excited to get my first Frenchie in 4 weeks time. We need to get him a bed. He will only be 8 weeks old. I was thinking about getting him an orthopedic bed . Do you think this is a good choice?

I would not recommend the orthopedic bed at this time, only because you will likely have to wash said-bed on more than one occasion, IF it survives your puppy's sudden urges to destroy his own bed :)

I got Quella at 8 weeks and for the past 16 weeks, she has chewed the bottoms out of 5 brand new beds, went pee, poo and vomited on each of them, ruined 2 crate pads and 3 decorative couch pillows (which were going to Goodwill, so I gave to her). I luckily am 10-20 feet away from her throughout the day to distract her from destruction, but all it takes is me to be distracted with my work for her to tear a 1-3" hole in the bottoms of the beds and start shredding the stuffing. I recently bought her a cute nautical bed from Petsmart, but she only gets that when supervised. I feel like I'm holding her 'comfort' hostage, but until she behaves and stops wreaking havoc, unfortunately she doesn't get super nice and comfy beds. And yes, I totally want to get her an orthopedic bed as well!

XoXo from Quella La Roux and her mommy too!

At that age I would not spend too much money on a bed. We went through quite a few beds with Jax when he was younger cause he would chew holes on the bottom and pull out the stuffing. He also peed on them (but I would wash them). Not sure where you live but I have actually found some nice beds at Ross for a decent price.

We got all the puppy beds at tj maxx since Hudson would also chew out the bottom and pee on them. They actually have some very nice ones!

Yep, don't buy an expensive bed just yet. Get some cheap ones that can be easily washed. Sally' Comfy Crate Pads work well, plus we use washable cotton puppy pads that last a long time. Just google breeders pads and the ones we use are white cotton with a light blue moisture barrier bottom. Their about $8.00 each, money well spent. With Henri, we put his bed on one side of the crate and the pee pad on the other, and that has worked out well.

Thanks guys. I'm based in South Africa so will have a look at what they have here. Thanks for all the advice :)

Speaking of beds, Bear shredded one yesterday. Lol. Funny that the first time he does something destructive is the only day we skipped daycare.

We have a large sofa shaped one from Costco and it's lasted really well. Hugo is a heavy chewer and it's looked rather tatty but holding up to the onslaught. I have to trim some straggles off. its a brocade sort of material lined in calico type cotton. The cushions all come out so the cover can be washed so far it's been pretty water resistant and the cushions are holding up.

For the crate I buy old babysheets, blankets and towels from charity shops from 50p box. If peed on they get washed, puked on they get binned!

Pierce has a very soft bed from TJ Maxx that I got for $10. He loves it and we are lucky that he hasn't decided to shred it. Even Schatzi, our toy-shredding dachshund, leaves the beds alone.
My one thing I have found with Frenchies is they often like to put their head up on the edge of something. I would try to get a bed that has some kind of soft side on it. Pierce's favorite thing to rest his head on is usually my leg!
Happy bed hunting. I know you are excited.

So true about Frenchies putting their head on something. I thought it was just Jax that did that but he LOVES to use pillows and always rests his head on the edge of his bed when he sleeps in there.

Great advice! Hudson does this too and also lays on his back so he requires sides. He has rejected all flat beds.

Between the three P's (pee, puke and poop) I wouldn't spend a lot to begin with. I use inexpensive fleece throws over mine sometimes too. You can just scoop them up and wash and maybe, just maybe, whatever P it is hasn't gone all the way through!!!

Good luck!

I always make sure to buy the ones that have zippers so I can take the covers off and wash them. Now I did just buy some handmade beds from a speciality shop at the Sawdust festival. It's a small festival for arts that live in Laguna Beach. Anyway, this really nice lady makes them and I can just throw the entire thing in the washing machine! Then lay out to dry in the sun. I'm excited to see how they come out of the washer. :) Will post pics after I get them.....
