Hi there!

We are new here! My name is Aly and my dogs name is Lou!
He is a 6 month year old frenchie.

If anyone could help it would be great!! Heres what is going on with Lou:

At 14 weeks we got him, he had diarrhea, the vet checked him for Parvo and parasites (negative) he was put on flagyl which helped temporarily. We switched his food to The honest kitchen Embark, he wasn't gaining weight, diarrhea after every meal, and pooping almost 9 times a day, he was positive for giardia, we then put him on flagyl and panacur for 7 days re-tested for giardia (negative). We switched his food to Royal Canin GI (vet recommended) and now has been having blood in his stool, no diarrhea but soft stools. He is also straining to have a bowel movement and nothing comes out but a drop of blood. He also had a treatment for localized mange (advantage multi) 2 days ago.
We have also tried putting pumpkin in his food as well as a probiotic

Also gained 4 pounds in the last 3 weeks! 16.5 pounds currently

If anyone can help that would be great!!

Seems like we are getting no where with the vet and it is costing a fortune!!

Thanks!
-Aly

Nexgard is a bit better than advantage multi for mange, so try that next month if not all better.

With regards to his food, Royal Canine GI is not good quality. The Honest Kitchen Embark you had him on was much better, or try a different protein Honest Kitchen like Hope (beef and chickpea). Keep adding 1 tablespoon a day of canned pumpkin and a doggie probiotic like Herbsmith Microflora Plus or Proviable DC.

Giardia can sometimes test negative even if present. You should get him tested again. Quite often it takes a few courses of panacur +/- flagyl, I've seen it recommended to treat blindly with a second course 2 weeks later. It's important to wash dog daily and clean environment daily during treatment.

Thank you! Ya we have cleaned the entire house all of his toys and washed him multiple times. Will try those pro biotics. Thanks for the advice! It's so frustrating I feel awful for lou! He hasn't lost his appetite, drinks a ton of water, and plays all day.

Agreed... giardia can be very hard to combat!

Hi! Quick update,

We took Lou to a different vet. We sent his poop away for further testing (in the sample i used 3 different poops) hopefully that will make sure the guard is present in at least one of them. We switched him to love (beef) honest kitchen which is much better. Started adding probiotics to his food and that has also seemed to help.

Thank you for all the help!
Will keep you updated on his poop sample results

Thank you!
His stool sample came back negative for giardia and other parasites. He was diagnosed with the coronavirus.. basically he has to fight it off on his own. He drinks a ton of water and is still happy and playful and eating all of his meals.
We noticed on honest kitchen he poops 8-9 times a day and on the GI food he was down to 4 poops a day.. The vet suggested a GI food (science diet) until the virus is gone.. we are torn. We have tried so many different foods..
Any suggestions would help!!
Thanks!

My dog poops about 3-4 times day on EasyRaw dehydrated raw, which is similar to Honest Kitchen. I'd try a frozen ground raw patty that is just meat, those tend to produce much less poops. eg this one is a local one in Toronto area that has ground meat products that are 80% meat and muscle, 10% organs and 10% bones.

Or, you could add canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) , or soaked chia seed or food grade diatamaceous earth to the Honest Kitchen.

Thank you! We started adding pumpkin and noticed a difference, cleaned the entire house and all of his toys! Hoping to be on the mend soon, thank you all for your advice!! :)

Hi there,

Wanted to give an update/ help anyone else with this same problem. The vet put Lou on Baytril for 2 weeks, so far no blood and hard poops with only 2-3 poops a day! We also switched Lou over to a raw food beef diet which is helping him gain weight!

Hope this helps anyone going through any GI issues!

Great news ! Check with your vet if this is long enough time for Baytril- I've heard of it being used for 6 weeks for histiocytic ulcerative colitis.
Also, make sure you are giving probiotics while time Lou is on Baytril and at least a week after.
