I know that all dogs are individuals but in general is there a difference in the attitudes of males vs females? Is one more likely to be a cuddler? Is one more likely to play and be goofy? Is one more likely to be grumpy?
I think it really just depends on the dog. Some love to cuddle and others don't. All our Frenchies love to be around us, but Hilary will sit in your lap for a little while then off she goes, Hazel love to sit in you lap. Henri will for a little while, then it's time to play, but he is young yet. Our English, BeBe wants to sit by you and Lucy doesn't.
Before I got a Frenchie I always heard that the boys were the major love bugs/cuddlers. Don't know if it's actually true with the majority of them but Hudson is the world' biggest Velcro dog haha. He also gets along with all other dogs.
I originally wanted a boy frenchie, given my experience was so great with my male English... And my female English was much more demanding... I ended up with the most loving, affectionate, snuggly little female frenchie - - beyond my wildest dreams! So, you can talk generalizations, but every dog is unique! Best of luck in your search!
Piper our girl is a huge snuggle bug. She's always on our lap and at our side. She follows us everywhere and sleeps with my 6 year old at night until she falls asleep.
Our Jake loves affection! You can hold him on his back in your arms like a baby. He sleeps in bed with us too. Stella on the other hand is very high energy and high strung. She doesn't like to be held and won't sit next to you on the couch. I had similar traits in my bull terriers (way back when) the male was super sweet and cuddly. The female, more independent and stand-offish. Good luck to you!
Leo is the king of cuddles!! He too, will sleep in your arms like a human baby (on his back). Molly on the other hand is not a cuddler, but she does LOVE to play, and both are very funny! Once in a while though, if she is sleepy enough, you can pick her up and hold her like a baby and she will sleep like that for quite a while! They love each other too, which is a great pleasure to see them play together and sleep together! Both demand Mommy's attention too!
Gidget was the solo Frenchie when we brought her home. She is a 'velcro' dog when I am around. Everywhere I go. Olivia and Wilson both love to snuggle as well. Sometimes one or both will be on the bed while I am reading. Sometimes they are just doing their own thing. You will know when you meet him or her.
That's so true. If it's at all possible, I'd recommend not getting attached to a pup in a photo. Instead, go and meet the litter. I was hooked on a photo pup but when I went to actually see her, I met the gal who would eventually become Bisou. I picked her up and she went limp in my arms. I sat on the breeder's couch for 4 hours that afternoon just cuddling with that sweet little girl and knew she was the one for me. Best. Fit. Ever.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I know they are all individuals. I was just wondering if there were generalizations regarding "snugglers". I know that throughout my life the male dogs I have had have been more likely to snuggle and the females more independent.
This is a huge generalization, but in my observations at dog parks, beaches, groups, etc.females are largely the most spunky/feisty, interested in toys, alert and (sometimes) grumpy! The males tend to be more easy-going, and typically referee the play, join in on the periphery and are content to stand at their owner's side. This is just my observation.
But I do know that all Frenchies crash after a long day of play and I am sure they're all very cuddly. Lol.
I originally wanted a male frenchie because of my previous experiences. I had owned 4 female dogs during my lifetime, always preferring them. Then I added my DiMaggio, a male malitpoo and he was the most cuddly affectionate and loveable dog I had ever owned. I was convinced it was because he was a male and from now on, I would only get male dogs. When looking for my frenchie, it was only males I was interested in. The opportunity to own a French bulldog came my way and it was a female. I have to say, I believe that God gave me what I needed and not what I wanted. I could not have asked for a better dog than Tullulah. She is sweet, loving, cuddly, affectionate, easy going, laid back and everything I ever wanted in a bulldog. So, my stereotypes went out the window. Every dog is different, and I think observing their behavior is a better indicator of temperament than sex.
Our breeder said (from her experience, and based on the litter of pups we were choosing from) that Isabelle (unnamed at the time) was the least snuggly, and her two brothers were much more affectionate.
Isabelle is a giant cuddle bug. She follows you around, loves hugs (literally snuggles her head into your neck/shoulder and hugs back), and sleeps suction cupped to me.
It's definitely dog by dog. And apparently can be misread by even an 18 year & counting breeder!
