Hi all,
Iā€™ve recently had to consider options for my Nellie given that there has been a sudden change in the way things have been since we got her. A little over a week ago my BF had to leave the country abruptly due to some immigration issues. We somewhat expected this but were still hopeful that he could stay. But he has had to leave and left a huge hole in both mine and Nellieā€™s life! ļŒ In any case, he was the main person that she spent the day with when I was at work. Because he is a contractor he was able to come home often and spend time with her during the day. I work far from home and donā€™t have that luxury. Since his departure, Iā€™ve had to rely on a pet sitter since am away at work for 10 hours of the day (including commuting time). The pet sitter is adorable but itā€™s been a change for me allowing a stranger into my home. Iā€™ve thought it was good for Nellie because she still gets to stay home and be in her normal environment. My BF leaving didnā€™t seem to affect her too too much other than her being sad and looking everywhere for him the first 2 days after he left. It broke my heart! But she seemed to trudge along. I have noticed however, since last Sunday a bit of change in her (due to some anxiety experiencing her first rain/thunderstorm). She seems a bit more aggressive and almost angry at me when I leave her and when I get home. She seems excited to see me but does not look at me and barks at me. She has been eating up my furniture like crazy but that could be a different issue. My BF got us a webcam before he left so that I can keep an eye on her. Itā€™s been very handy albeit keeping me away from my work. I watched the sitter with her a few times and she is super sweet but maybe just a tad bit odd. She pets her a lot and talks to her and sings to her like an actual baby! It is slightly funny to watch. I am worried that because we both have different ways of interacting with her, she is learning to be unruly instead. I pay her $20 for the day and she comes for two hours. Not that I think the daycare will be as consistent but am hoping they have trained staff that can keep her in line. She is a bit of a diva and itā€™s been partly my fault given the situation but with the lack of consistency Iā€™m afraid thereā€™ll be trouble down the line. I have been debating the following options, and wanted to know if anyone had any advice? I realize some of these options are not sustainable unless I win the lottery. But while sheā€™s still young and getting adjusted to things, I have to come up with a plan. My boyfriendā€™s departure has left me ill prepared and not sure what long term plan to have for her.
1. Put her in doggy daycare full time (5 days) ā€“ this option is very pricy itā€™ll be about $565 a month but unlimited access including weekends too.
2. Put her in day care 2 days a week ($300 every 6 weeks); then have the sitter come two days a week ($150/month); and then work from home one day a week. My issue with this is that it might be too confusing for her as dogs need a routine. Perhaps all this confusion is what is leading to her anxiety and aggressive behaviour?
3. Keep the sitter full time ($400/month). But she cannot do Thursdays and Fridays due to other commitments.
4. Get a dog walker daily $15/hr ā€“ obviously the cheapest option but this will be just 45mins to an hour. And since am gone 10hrs or so, she will be alone most of the time.
She is 15 weeks old right now and is due for her final round of shots next Thursday. She hasnā€™t had a chance to socialize with any other dogs or puppies so I think the daycare will help that.

Jax loves, loves, loves daycare. And I mean he loves it. It's like his Disneyland. He goes at least once a week, sometimes twice. If it's a day he is going to go, I say "do you wanna go to daycare? do you wanna go play?" And he starts running around. They love him there too. And on hot days, he plays in the water. Usually after a day at daycare he sleeps for two days because he is to tired. I can also tell when he needs to go because he is crazier than normal and has a high energy he needs to get out.

You can do a mix of these to fit her energy and your budget.... dogs are situational and adapt better than we like to admit. Nellie will come to know what to expect on what day... maybe daycare 1 or 2 days a week, with a pet sitter or dog walker for the other days. if your pet sitter hangs for 2 hours.... that is well worth it. I pay $16 and it is only for 45 mins.

Thanks all! yes i think the mix would be a good thing to do. I will do 2 days of day care, the sitter for two days and work from home one day. That should be good for a few months until she is potty trained and i can reduce the day care maybe.

So I dropped Nellie off at daycare this morning for half a day. I am working from home ...well more like the starbucks down the street from the daycare haha! She was so nervous and i am wrecked with guilt! She was shaking and all but i figured she needs this. They said it looks like she'll be fine acclimatizing. She is so little though...i hope the other dogs are nice to her. I am holding back on calling to see how shes doing. The daycare normally posts videos on their instagram page so am waitng eagerly to see how she is. HA! what am i going to do when i have a human baby?! i never thought i'd be such a siftie

I genuinely worry about my two frenchies as much as I do my actual child. Sometimes I worry MORE since my child is old enough to tell me what's wrong/if he gets hurt/etc & they are just wittle helpless doggies! Haha!

They are like adding a toddler to your family, except the toddler stays a toddler its entire life so you are filled with worry LOL. You aren't alone ;)

But I am SURE that she is fine and this will be good for her! Conditioning her to new situations and many other types and breeds of dogs with many personalities is a GOOD thing! Luckily both of mine aren't aggressive with introductions, but I almost feel guilty I didn't expose them to more!

Thanks! This makes me feel a lot better! When i picked her up she still was shaking but calmed down once i pi led her up. She was exhausted probably form the emotional high of something so new. She slept most of the day when we came back lol. The daycare staff said she did great...she was more curious than anything. She didn't play much but was eager to meet the other dogs. They think she'll be just fine. So for now, she'll be going one day a week. Then two days with the sitter, and my work has graciously allowed me to work two half days at home. I just wish she can talk and tell me how thing went ha ha ha.

I personally do not like doggie day care. I do not trust them, and down here where is is hot, if they let them outside to play and do not watch them closely, they can over heat and die. It has happened to several people in this area. We always get a pet sitter if we have to go out of town for something and can not take them with us. That's just my personal opinion.

My daycare for Radar has misters, a small waterfall with a pool and at minimum 3 people watching the dogs. They have a webcam and I can see what is going on real time. I think if you research and don't go for the cheapest option you are safe.
