About 3 months ago, my partner was with Charlie on the couch in the evening. All of a sudden, she got off the couch and ran underneath my desk where I was at to hide. She kept smacking her lips and squishing her face and you could see her drooling. The drool was clear and droplets like she just drank a bunch of water. She laid down. Then got restless and repositioned. Eventually she left under my desk and tried to lay down behind me on the ground. Still doing the smacking and drooling. We tried to comfort her to see what's wrong. I went back to the couch and she came and tried to lay down between us. Again, she wouldn't settle. Lay down for a min, then reposition. I massaged her back, legs, neck and head. I try to look in her mouth to see if anything is wrong. She's stubborn about me opening her mouth so that was hard. She did settle after a while but she was still drooling. After about 4 hours, it stopped. Didn't happen again for over a month. We knew it was weird but maybe just a fluke. Maybe Charlie had a migraine or something. Well it happened again about 3 more times. It occurred about 1.5 months ago. Then about 3 weeks ago. That's when we set up an appointment with her vet(2 weeks out). After setting the appointment, it happened 2 weeks ago. We just saw the vet last week. Did blood work and xray. We got her blood tests back and their opinion is, she's healthy but maybe it's gastroesophageal reflux. Of course when we saw the vet, Charlie was normal. We havent collected her urine and stool samples yet but they said they dont expect to see anything out of the norm. They know she eats FreshPet nuggets.

The vet wants to rule out GERD and "her stomach is emptying properly" and wants us to go on a low-fat diet. They said FreshPet has higher content than average. They recommended Purina ProPlan sensitive salmon&rice. Well I'm not sure if i'm looking at the right data but according to the Purina's website, it lists that product at crude fat 17%, compared to Freshpet 10%. Maybe there's a formula I'm supposed to use to come up with the proper analysis. The other food they suggest is Just Food For Dogs but honestly, it seems poorly balanced. It's a tiny bit of meat with mainly carb.

Anyways, Charlie's stools have been fine. There's been zero new food or treat introductions in this time span. Nothing out of the norm besides those discomfort and drooling episodes. I'm 99.9% sure they are not seizures.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Sorry to hear about Charlie. My Frenchie has gone thru the same thing. The drooling is pain/discomfort. I no longer let him jump on or off any furniture as that could be what caused it. My vet said the same thing and of course no drooling happened at that time.

As for the food, I wouldn’t switch as Purina is not a good food with all the ingredients in it.

IVDD is always on my mind. Cant help it ith this breed. So Charlie has used ramps and/or stairs since she was a puppy. I think at 2 years, we've only used ramps. She's 5.5 years now. She uses the bedroom ramp 99% of the time. Our bed is pretty high, so the ramp is relatively steep but she has no issues walking up or down it. Now she prefers to jump off the ramp mid point or use the ramp as a springboard to jump onto the bed a lot of times. 😵 And ih man when the zooming hit. She'll run up the ramp and jump off our bed. So when that happens, we close the bedroom door lol.

She uses the couch ramp prob 75% of the time. She does prefer to jump onto the couch. If we catch her wanting up or done, we'll try to correct and encourage ramp and she'll listen most of the time.

We don't play tug-o-war with her much. Very light and minimal resistance to keep her entained for a few minutes so at most.

I thought for sure it was a bad tooth bc I see more tartar than before. Vet said her teeth are actually great. Yes some tartar but minimal and saw no signs of inflammation. Ruled out ears.

I do noticed sometimes lately it seems she's holding back her full head/body shakes. She still does them but maybe I'm just paranoid. Normally she just let's it rip. Starts with head, working down the body to her rear legs swinging lol. But I swear I've seen it a couple times where she starts her head and seems to slow down the motion.

My boy is 14 years old.. he has had this happen countless times… at first we did all the same things.. process of elimination, none made any difference. He occasionally has it happened but I let it be and treat as an overactive saliva gland. We did give him antacids for awhile. As others stated, limit stairs, and jumping — you can’t stop it, but limits do help

Please do not change to Purina food, it’s not a good brand at all.

Yes, the fet recommended we could try Prilosec to see if that helps. There's also a mobile radiologist will be stopped at their clinic on the 1st where they could do an ultrasound of Charlie if we're interested in more diagnostic.
