Just started the transition from kibble (Orijen) to Freeze dried raw (Small batch) tonight. What's the deal with having to de-worm if your dog is eating raw? Do I have to worry about this? And is freeze dried raw different than straight raw in this respect? Carrot reacts really badly to the deworming medication so I'd rather not have to do that too often if it's not necessary

Jax is on raw and I just give him Sentinel Spectrum once a month which is for fleas/worms. I don't do anything special.

Your dog can't catch worms from dehydrated or freeze dried raw dog food since the meat is first frozen to kill the worms before it is processed. You can catch bacteria such as salmonella if the food is contaminated but the companies are supposed to test their dog foods before they release them.

However your dog can still have worms from inhaling or eating poos on the ground or eating infected fleas or drinking contaminated water or by contact with other infected dogs. Lately I've been giving my dog Sentinel Spectrum every 2 months from June to November since it hits all worms including heartworm. The drug only lingers in the system for a day, compared to using a topical medicine like Advantage Multi or Revolution which is there all month.

Hmmmm. I should think about doing that. Not for the food (now that I know dehydrated raw isn't an issue) but Carrot tends it like to eat bird poo - gross. I swear there is nothing this girl DOESNT like to eat!!! Only thing I give her is Bravecto once every three months but that's just for fleas and tics. Since I live in LA, my vet doesn't seem to think she needs anything else

Before when I wrote Sentinel Spectrum I meant Interceptor Spectrum, since Interceptor Spectrum will kill heartworm and ALL worms. Be a good idea to give her a Interceptor Spectrum every 2 months to deworm her and prevent heartworm. Give it at mealtime, otherwise your dog will throw it up ( mine did ). You can combine that with the Bravecto, but space them at least a week apart on the month you give Bravecto. If you have never tested Carrot for heartworm you should, since the milbemycin in Interceptor Spectrum is the fastest kill of all the heartworm meds so can cause an allergic reaction if Carrot already has heartworm.

Which raw? I think Spot Farms and Only Natural Pet Grain-Free MaxMeat Air Dried Dog Food work out to be the cheapest dehydrated raw.

And I think you are better off giving the Interceptor Spectrum instead of Sentinel Spectrum since they both have milbemycin and praziquantel for worms, but Sentinel also has lufenuron for fleas which you don't need if you are using a separate tick and flea product ( I use Interceptor Spectrum plus topical K9 Advantix II )

I don't do dehydrated raw, I use raw patties. The brands I use are Vital Essentials for rabbit and chicken, Tucker's for salmon and pork and Hoo-raw for bison. And sometimes I get a Primal chub of sardines.

I don't need to worry about ticks in my area so the Sentinel Spectrum works out good.

And I forgot about the tripe. I have green bison tripe delivered from a local company.

UGH. So, I didn't read your answer clearly enough and just gave Carrot a dose of the Sentinel Spectrum a day after I gave her the Bravecto. IS that bad??? Should i have waited a week? What will happen now?

Carrot will be fine since they work differently. Optimally it's better to separate them, but if you didn't , it's fine. In the past when I first got my dog and didnt know better I applied Advantage Multi one day and Advantix II the next and my dog was fine.

I'm not trying to scare you but you may consider finding something better to give than Bravecto. I was using nexgard monthly but have since decreased to every other month and eventually hoping to go natural. Please check out the Facebook page: Does Bravecto Kill Dogs.

I consider Nexgard quite safe unless your dog has a seizure disorder. Bravecto hangs around longer so not quite as safe. I don't personally use either since I think a topical product like K9 Advantix II or Vectra 3D will prevent mosquitoes and ticks from even biting, so will prevent any possible allergic reactions from the bites.
