Hi guys and gals,

Have a 10 yr old frenchie that has been having trouble keeping his food down for the past few days. He still has a appetite to eat but just as soon as he starts eating he can’t keep it down. The regurgitation consists of his food along with the white foam that we all are accustomed too. A little brief background on my frenchie. He’s always had this throwing up of food once in awhile, nothing new. He hasn’t had his soft pallet removed either(maybe this is the problem?). If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated!! Please help!

Have you tried giving 5mg antacid about 20 mins before eating? I do this with my guy and it seems to help

I agree. Try Pepcid. Also, what kind of bowl are you using? Is it elevated? That might help as well.

Thank you so much!!! I will try the antacid tonite and see if that will do the trick. Also I wanted to mention that he has also been having this strange “hack” like he’s trying to clear something out of his throat. Through the years he’s had this from time to time but for the past 2 weeks he has been doing it more and more. Maybe this is due to his age? Fred is about 9 years old.

CBrugs. the bowl he’s been using is a deep bowl that I just put on the floor not elevated.

Again thank you so much for your responses and help! Keep em coming!

Maybe try one of those “flat faced dog” feeding bowls.

Since the hack has been more persistent recently, might want to see the vet.

In my opinion, you should get him checked out by a vet. Hopefully it is nothing serious, but I think this is a case where you want to get it checked out. I had a Frenchie that had similar problems, and it turned out to be rather serious. My dog had a lot of other issues and symptoms at the time, so chances are that your problem is something less serious, but I would still get it checked out.

With my dog, it was the solid consistency of the food that was the primary issue. You might want to try getting some soft canned dog food and diluting it with water or chicken broth to see if he is able to keep it down, or buy some human infant turkey baby food, it has consistency of pudding. Best of luck and hopefully it is small issue that you will get worked out soon.

First thing to do is make sure he didn't swallow something blocking throat, eg. a fish bone, or some kind of toy. Try to feed a lower fat diet, ie. no added coconut oil.

Usual dose of famotidine is 0.5-1mg/kg so dose can be increased if needed. I would try using it once or twice daily regularly for a month, and if not helping then go to vet. He/she can try a stronger class, called proton pump inhibitor , eg. omeprazole 0.7-1 mg/kg once or twice daily, or add a motility drug ( metoclopramide ) .

Hi everyone thanks again for the reply’s. Took Fred to the vet today. They did x rays and said they didn’t find anything obstructing his airway. Vet said he might have eaten something giving him gas maybe. She wasn’t really sure. They gave him a shot and send home some meds. I really hate taking my frenchies around my area as they dont seem really well versed in this specific breed. I hope my dear Fred is ok. We are going to see how he reacts to the medication.

. Thanks for update. He doesn’t have the issue mine had as that would have shown up on x-Ray.
I hope Fred feels better soon.

Hi gang, back at it again. Been two several vets and they all are baffled as to what is wrong with my pup :(. He’s was getting a bit better but nothing significant. I guess I’m going to try to take the advice from fellow members here about the antacid thing before feeding. Our family is so lost with this as we don’t know where to go from here........

No they did some xrays and concluded that his stomach was inflamed. Gave Antibiotics and some medicine to reduce phlegm. It helped very little for the first two weeks although he was still throwing up his food and what not. I’m giving him half a 10mg antacid to see if that works. Poor guy, seems like he’s been throwing up for so long now.
