hi,does anyone elses frenchie gulp there food ? our frenchie is forever being sick as he never chews anything we give him ! hes on sensitive skin purina biscuits adult as hes now 18 months but he chews nothing ? it obviously sits in his stomach then he just spews it up ! any advice folks ? we were thinking of trying him on some sort of meat instead as hes being sick a lot :(

we are in the uk and we also tried a gulp bowl but he would just leave his food instead of attempting to try and get at it with the gulp bowl as frenchies do have a kind of flat face so it was very hard for him

I would try a different food. Some foods don't set well with them. We had a Beagle that would throw up her food, and we tried several brands, until we finially found one that worked for her. Most will not chew their food and swallow it whole. Plus if he still throws up a different food, have him checked by a vet, he could have a digestive problem, as in megaesophagus.

Try feeding frequent small amounts of a low fat dog food since fat slows down emptying of the stomach. I would think a wet dog food would be better since there is no chewing required. eg. naturediet salmon wet food ( I saw that on a UK site ) . You could also give an acid reducing drug like ranitidine ( non prescription ) to prevent burning of the esophagus from acid splashing up, or domperidone (needs prescription) to speed emptying of the stomach if you need pharmaceutical help.

As above, and maybe try a raised feeder too? We have a Willowstep, and it helped with Dexter being sick and having excessive gas due to swallowing his dinner in about 5 seconds..... I had him on Wainwrights trays from Pets at Home due to him almost choking twice. It definitely helps :-)

thanks for the advice folks,my sister has him at the moment as we are away for a bit & she says hes been sick a few times & its his food all bulked up ! hes been like this for a while as hes been sick a lot at our house, its not everyday but it does happen

he can have his tea about 19.00 at night and then when its time for bed about 23.00/00.00hrs out it comes !! ive never seen ramos chew anything all the time we have had him ! treats and all swallowed doesnt touch the sides

I would have an allergy test done to see if he is alletgic to something inthe foo.... I had a bulldog that was like this and it turned out he was allergic to rice and chicken

I would try a few things. You could change his food in case of allergies. There are feeding bowls that will force your dog to eat slower. The feeding step also is a great idea if you have the room. My Wally is also a gulper but he doesn't eat fast enough to get sick, thankfully.

my new 15mo old pup also is a gulper. I have owned him for 72hrs at this point. He has stubby teeth. He seems to puke 3x after each 3/4 cup of food. It is always whole. He clearly is keeping some down but does throw-up some food and a white foam. My opinion is that he is eating to fast but am open to ideas. We do have another dog that eats as fast but she is a hound. He also came from a house that had 5 other adult dogs. At the moment he is eating Health Extensions grain free little bites they had him on dog chow). He seems to like the new food a lot. I was thinking about getting bigger bite size but not really sure how that will help. I have followed the gulping thread to this point and am looking for some ideas...thanks

Yay! Glad you found a solution. He is pretty stinkin cute btw.

Glad you found a solution that works for you and your Frenchie

Maddy used to inhale her kibbles like there's no tomorrow! I then started stuffing kibbles inside the kongs, but too much work for me. I then bought a slow feeder bowl. She was confused the first time and didn't know how to eat from it. It took her few meals to get used to. Then she figured out the slow feeder and cut it down from 10min to maybe 3 min. Still pretty good. I recently got her a different slow feeder bowl with even higher ridges so it's more difficult to get to the kibbles. Now she averages about 7min when eating the kibbles.

Well we are a mess again. Headed to the vet today.
