I have a 14 week old frenchie. She was diagnosed the other day with giardia, and was given medication which we have been giving her. She's been showing some odd (unlike her) symptoms lately and I'm wondering if it's something more.

The other night, we had her in bed with us. She was out cold sleeping, and all of a sudden got up, walked to the end of the bed and peed. Then my husband took her out of the bed and she peed again while in his arms, then we placed her in her crate and she peed again, and it was a lot of pee. Prior to going to bed she peed twice as well. We called a 24 hour animal hospital and brought her in. Halfway there in the car she was getting restless and we had to stop and she peed again. The vet checked her out and said that she was fine (she had drank a lot of water prior to that happening) but we were just paranoid first time puppy parents and wanted to make sure that she was okay.

On the way to the vet the other day for her check up, she threw up a bit in my lap, and then threw up again this morning.. these were the only two times she has vomited so far.. but again, odd.

Also, she has had a bit of a cough, with hacking - the doctor said it may be kennel cough but should go away on it;s own. I just hate seeing my baby not feeling well. Both vets we went to told me that she is healthy, except for that parasite which is being treated. Am I just being paranoid here?

Was she checked for a UTI?

The vomiting could be from the giardia. Is it food she is throwing up? Bile? Bile usually indicates an empty stomach. If she threw up on the way to the vet's office, it could have been car sickness.

Coughing could definitely be from kennel cough which normally goes away on its own. However, if it persists or seems to get worse, they can prescribe an antibiotic.

They didn't test her for a UTI.. I read that is what it could be as well. She just vomited up a bit of food. Vet also mentioned that the vomiting in the car could be motion sickness as well.

Think it's just best to wait it out?

If she is peeing that much, I would ask for her to be tested for a UTI.

Oh, I thought it was an ongoing issue. If it was just one night, it’s possible she drank too much. If it continues to happen, I would check for UTI.

Sometimes metronidazole which is used for giardia can cause vomiting too. What medications is she on for the giardia? Usually it's a combination of fenbendazole and metronidazole and you have to make sure dog is washed from head to toe and environment disinfected before end of treatment to avoid reinfection. And it's a good idea to blindly repeat treatment in 2 weeks

She is on metronidazole, so vomiting is a side effect of that? She'll be done with the medication on Thursday and then I'm going to give her a full bath and disinfect everything. I think I may even purchase new bowls just in case. Then take her back to the vet for a checkup. When you say blindly repeat treatment, you mean with more metronidazole?

Yes the metronidazole can cause vomiting. I'd blindly retreat in two weeks with the fenbendazole +/- the metronidazole since it's easy to get reinfected and dog doesn't always test positive when you test their stool.

Some people have had to treat for giardia with more than round of medication. Jax has had it twice and one round of panacur was enough both times. But sometimes it can be hard to get rid of it.

Agreed.. giardia can be a real tough fight. Disinfect everything eveyday

Good advice above and definitely disinfect often. Hope your baby gets better soon.
