Hello,

I have 2 bulldogs, one 10 weeks old and the other 14 months.

My older one is currently on a home made food diet consisting of hamburg, rice, and frozen vegetables. Will he get all his proper nutrients from this?

I would like to get him back on a solid dry food diet but when I tried the Wellness brand he would always have diahrea. Please comment.

you need to do a slow switch, did you do the transition over about 10 days? doing it with the transition can upset the tummy and overall system

As 2bullymama said, you need to do a slow transition, plus once the get on kibble and the poop is still too soft, cut back on the amount a little to see if it firms up. Too much food will make the poop soft.

Hamburger, rice and frozen vegetables is not going to give him everything he needs. If you want to feed home cooked or raw follow the 80-10-10 % rule. 80% muscle meat, 10% organ and 10% bone.
That said though the home diet is still waaaay better than kibble. You just have to follow a few little rules but its the healthiest and best thing you can do for them.

If you absolutely want to go back to kibble I suggest as the others said transition slow and feed a high quality kibble with a probiotic.

You can also try some 100% pure pumpkin to help firm up the stool. But you should try to find the cause first.

Thank you very much for the help.

Do you have a specific home food diet you could reccomend?

Does anyone have a good specific home diet recipe to recommend

Here is a recipe that bullmama has posted:

Ground Chuck Hamburger, boiled. Drain fat/grease and add 2 cups water or broth. I will also add chicken, fish, or whatever else I may need to get eaten but usually it's just hamburger.

10% potatoes, rice, pasta, cous-cous, ect. (starch)

2 16 ounce cans of lentils (not drained) or 1 cup dried lentils, soaked and cooked. I use mostly red kidney beans but will use just about any type and mix all the dry beans up for variety including chick peas and garbonzo beans, butter beans, black beans, pinto beans, ect.

10-15% veggies I usually use a Normandy style fresh frozen mix from costco, but they also have a stir fry, and also whatever I may need to use up in my crisper I will chop up as well. No onions, don't forget!

First I will cook the beans if they are dry beans, if not I cook and drain the hamburger, then add the starch and beans, then toss the frozen veggies on top. I will let it cook for an extra 45 mins or so until the starch is cooked.

I like to chop up the veggies into smaller pieces. I do not like to over cook the veggies or they will lose their nutritional value. So steaming them on top works well.

Each time I want to feed them I will put a large amount in a bowl and reheat it in the microwave for 3-4 minutes. Less depending on how much but I am talking about 5 cups of food.

& dont forget if you home cook add a high quality supplement. Instead of the rice you could also use Quinoa or sprouted brown rice which is lower in starch.
You may also want to add a good probiotic such as Kefir.

What is a good supplement to add?

Exactly! Remember this is a base diet. As you feed home cooked you can start switching out ingredients and adding new ones for other choices. Never change too many ingredients at once, I only add or change one at a time that way you can tell if there's any adverse reactions.

Hmm, good to know!
