I gave Gracie a frozen raw marrow bone for the first time. She loved it of course -- she chewed on it for about half an hour non-stop (a miracle!). Here's my question -- for those of you who use these, how often is it okay to give her one? Is this something that can be given to her daily?

The marrow is very good but fatty. So watch the poop!

Thank you, I didn’t realize that. If that’s the case I’ll make it an occasional treat. She’s previously had liver problems and is on a low fat diet.

I give them occasionally but more because I am lazy about going to get them. They are great for their teeth as well.

I think 2bullymama gives them on a regular basis and then also fills them with peanut butter.

I give them once a week... Saturday night treat

Thanks all for your feedback! I'll probably go the once a week route. It's just so tempting to give it to her more often since it keeps her occupied like nothing else. She's a busy girl.

I do the same. My dogs never cared for Kongs so I use raw bones instead.

Are there any special tricks or hints when it comes to offering these? I just spent over 20 minutes sitting on the floor holding a marrow bone like a big dummy, while Daphne licked and licked and licked at it. I tried putting her in the bathroom behind a baby gate but she kinda just pushed it around with her nose and gave it a couple licks. Do you put your dog in a crate with it? Let them carry it around the house? Mine was a little blood drippy (sorry, gross). I'm not comfortable with her carrying it around and dropping it who knows where. And like I said, she would only go at it when I was holding it for her.

I throw the boys into their separate crates with them because (1) I don't want it all over my floors and furniture and (2) if they are not separated out, they will fight over them.

So your guys manage to lick and chew on them themselves, then, right? She just wouldn't do anything with it unless I was holding it for her. I'll try putting her in her crate later and see if she can figure it out ;-)

Thanks!

Yes, as soon as they see the bones they go crazy. I throw them into the crate, close the door and they usually go to town for quite awhile.

Cheli was like that at first with them too... I had to be holding it, so I place it in his crate and he slowly started gnawing on it, I waited a bit and then opened the door... he has been a pro ever since. Another thing, if they are frozen, run it under cold water for a minute.. it takes the 'freeze' off so they take to it quicker.

Ok, thanks for the tip!

I gave it to Gracie outside. She just laid in the grass and went to town.

Be careful, our Buddy had the worst diarrhea after one of the frozen marrow bones from PetSmart.

Yes, as an update Gracie also had terrible diarrhea. I don't know if it was the bone or not. It was several days later. I got ours at a specialty shop that sells Answers and other raw/premium foods. I got two and I'm afraid to give her the second one.

Marrow can cause loose stools. If you are wanting to try again, you can thaw it and scoop out a majority of the marrow, so your dogs aren't ingesting as much at one time.

Aw, sorry to hear that happened @Gracies Mom and Jaxson

My first experience with a raw marrow bone was last week. I put Daphne in her crate after taking everything out (bedding, toys, etc...) and she did not stop licking and chewing on it for at least 30-40 minutes. She eventually got all the marrow out. I was watching her closely for loose stool, but she did not experience any. The bones I bought are Tucker's brand and it was bison. Daphne is fed raw frozen patties for her regular meals so I perhaps that has something to do with it?

If you do decide to try again, I think Frenchie Grrrl has a great idea of scooping out some of the marrow until they get better used to having this treat :)

I only plan on giving it once or twice a month as a special treat.

Yes, Frenchie Grrrl, that sounds like a good idea. At the moment though we are continuing to struggle with vomiting and soft stools. We were at the vet's twice last week. I can't get her off the prescription science diet food. Every time we try something new, no matter how slow the transition, she has problems (vomiting and/or diarrhea). We had to discontinue the Answers raw. Even the goat's milk. Once again I'm just trying to get her stable. The only good news that came out of all the diagnostics is that she is completely free of Giardia as confirmed by the Elisa test. Otherwise the vet isn't sure what's going on.
