Hi all! Hey, has anyone here ever used Grapefruit Seed Extract for treating giardia? Beezy's fecal test came back positive for it the other day, so I'm preparing for the long haul we have ahead of us. She had it once before and I think we had to go through two rounds of Panacur before she tested negative (but maybe it never went away and we only got a false negative, I don't know). Anyway, I read online that GSE is effective, particularly the Citricidal brand. But, you know ... internetz and stuff. I could write a post about McDonald's fries curing cancer. Thoughts? Experiences?

The thing with giardia (that I've learned) is that it can lie dormant in their intestinal walls, so while the test isn't a "false" it isn't 100% that it's gone for good.

Never heard of the GSE. Interested to see any info though!

I've never heard of it either, but curious if it works.

Same... Never heard of this for giardia. And, yes, it is very hard to fully get them recovered--- blushy knows this better than anyone

I had no idea that it was hard to get rid of giarda in dogs. Nellie had it along with parvo about six weeks ago and was treated for it at emerg she was at for two. I wonder if she still has it then? Can I only find out through another fecal test?

Yes... When doing a fecal test make sure you request giardia otherwise it might mit be included

Thanks for letting me know! I'll be sure to get a fecal done the next time she's at the vet.

Before she came home from the hospital we had disinfected the whole house including her bed, crate and playpen. But none of the vets told us about cleaning up thoroughly where she poops. They told us about disinfecting the parvo but nothing about the giarda. She goes potty in our back yard in the grass and we always pick it up, but am not sure how to thoroughly clean that area? Also over night she goes on pee pads sometimes. I wish I knew about this earlier

UGH... That so sucks they did not tell you the giardia is contagious- you could have limited the area she poo in and made for easy containment .... Not sure how you could clean the yard --- if i think of anything I'll post

I just ordered some from Amazon, so we'll see. Here's a link to one particularly good site where they talk about using GSE for the treatment of parasites and other common Frenchie issues (hello, yeast anyone?). I like the fact that they say it works like an antibiotic without actually being an antibiotic, so no worries about wiping out good gut bacteria and no worries about developing a resistance.

I'll keep you all posted :)

I'm hoping it works for you! If it does I'm totally ordering whatever you ordered for my little guy!

Fingers crossed!

He's still having some relapse issues. We do a round of 3 day antibiotics once a month practically! [emoji52]
