Can anyone tell me what the most affordable heartworm preventative is for my frenchie? Also, flea and tick would be helpful too :)

I use Sentinel Spectrum which is for fleas and heartworm as well as other worms. Where I live, I don't need to worry about ticks.

thank you for the recommendation, how much does that usually go for?

It might go $50-60 for 6 doses. But it goes by weight and my guy is 30 pounds. If you wanted something cheaper you can use Frontline Plus or one of those topical treatments but they usually don't cover heartworm so you would need something separate for that.

If you want to cover heartworm and fleas and ticks, you need more than 1 medication:
Heartworm ( and other worms and fleas depending on which one):
topical - Advantage Multi or Revolution (Revolution doesn't reliably kill the tick that transmits lyme disease)
oral (cheaper option) : Sentinel, Interceptor, Heartgard Plus

Fleas and Ticks
topical: K9 Advantix II, Vectra 3D
oral: Nexgard,Bravecto

We use interceptor for worms and have been using Seresto collars for flea & tick control. Seresto works for 8 months so we never “missed a dose” but after several collars we’ve noticed that it had caused an allergy on our Boxer’s skin and we are switching back to topical. We are in a rural area where ticks are common so we also have gotten all our dogs Lyme vaccines.

We use Sentinel for heartworms and fleas, we don't have ticks where we live so that's not a problem. I do not like the topical flea and tick stuff, it can cause skin irritation.

I agree it's better to give oral heartworm medication if you can. You don't have to worry about skin irritation or when to wash your dog. And if you don't have ticks you can choose a product that protects against fleas as well like Sentinel or Sentinel Spectrum. But if you have ticks in your area, which most of us do, I think the second medication you give for fleas and ticks is better in topical form since it tends to prevent ticks and fleas from even landing on your dog and potentially causing allergies. Plus I think most people are more worried about chance of seizures from Nexgard or Bravecto or Simparica than they are about skin irritation from K9 Advantix II or Vectra 3D. They just have to make sure to keep the dog away from cats or children for about 4 hr after application.

I use Heartgard for heartworms, and Nexgard or Bravecto for fleas and ticks. Where I like we have fleas and mosquitos all year.
