My 3 year of male Frenchie has recently developed a quiet cough that sometimes ends with him trying to gag something up (rarely does anything actually come up). The vet took x-rays and blood work and found no clear cause. Put him on an antibiotic (Doxycycline) which cleared up the cough/gag within 2 days. The problem is it came back a few weeks later, and this cycle has continued to happen every couple weeks for the past 2 months. Has anyone experienced this before or know what could be causing it? Luckily the antibiotic has cleared it up each time, but not permanently. Thanks!!

Did the vet check for worms?? Cough and gag a classic sign. Take a stool sample in so it can be checked for eggs.

I'm wondering if it could be allergies. Try giving one 25 mg. Benedryl three times a day and see if that helps.

agreed! happens with Cheli a lot and the Benedryl helps

I'm thinking allergic cough as well. My family dog, a terrier mix, had that all the time for years and we never knew why. Every vet said he was fine. He'd cough quietly a bunch, then make this awful hacking noise. Sometimes there'd be a little foam, but usually nothing. We assumed he inhaled a hair or something. Once we got him on a raw diet, the coughing has disappeared.
