Danté gulps his food like it's his last meal and this afternoon after his usual inhalation he began to gag. He wasn't making any noises and i ran to grab him & he ran away from me. After he gagged a few times he got it down before I could reach in there to get any kibble out. I fed him dinner out of a raised dish. Will this help or should i go out and immediately get him a slow feed bowl?

That's scary. Olive eats so fast, I'm waiting for a choking episode to happen. If you go with a slow feed bowl, let me know how it works for you.

This might sound odd but you could try putting a couple of really large, clean rocks in the bowl so he has to work around them to get his food. Just make sure he can't get them in his mouth, and that he doesn't try to chew them. That should slow him down a little.

I'm reading that slow feed bowls are tough for short nosed dogs to get into. Might try a pacer ball if I can find one at petsmart tomorrow. I'm so paranoid that I'm thinking of switching him to an all-canned diet from fromm or merricks. Opinions?

Yes, very tough. I tried them with my 2 and haven't used them since! :)

Mine eat pretty quickly, but I not so fast that I'm concerned too much. Plus I'm right there in the kitchen while they are eating. :)

Also, if you feed just dry kibble, try a little (very little) warm water to JUST wet the food. It helps it go down easier. :)

My English Bulldog is like htis.... I add a little bit of water to the food which make he 'lap' instead of gobble the food... otherwise, I would use the slow feed balls, the bowls are a little more difficult for the short-nosed breeds

As others have said, try putting a little water in the kibble, it helps.

I had the same problem with Jake gulping his food and choking. I do mix his kibble with some warm water. Before investing in a special bowl, you could try feeding in a large shallow pan, like a cookie sheet, or baking dish. I did this with Jake to see if it would help and it did. I just purchased a very large stainless dog bowl so his kibble is spread out. Works fine.

So I'm going to mix dante's kibble with a little more water than i previously was. I was scared this might contribute to the choking - but apparently not. I also purchased the Martha Stewart slow feeder... And he did have a little bit of trouble getting his food but eventually was able to get it all. I hope this helps.... He literally scared the life outta me!
