Finally Trixie can go outside for walks.. Yaaaay!! Im going to start going to some obedience classes once the weather cools down but its too hot at the moment as its the height of summer.. Anyway when i take her for a walk i take treats and praise when she wee's & poo's outside, but when we're walking she runs in circles around me... The leash gets wound around me and im constantly changing hands to keep her on the same side as the leash.. How do i stop this? I want to teach her to heel but i have no idea how.. (I thought potty training was going to be the biggest issue but that's the least of my worries now hahaha) any help would be appreciated!! On a plus note.. She's so funny and clever, everyone that meets her falls in love! Added a pic too 😍

Make sure her leash is short and tight and try to control it so she is beside you. try teaching the command heal

they are stubborn but she will get it!!

you gotta be the one walking her not the other way around LOL

I would try to lure her with a high value treat in front of her nose to make her walk. Reward her with the treat when she walks forward and lure her again and again. Some people use a wooden spoon with a little peanut butter in front of the nose to get them moving, which will be easier on your back:)

Good advice about, and she will get it, just takes time and patience. Plus loved the pic, she is a cutie pie. :)

Thanks all, it'll take time but i'm sure she'll get there. We went for a walk last night to the local duck park and we got stopped about 100 times by people wanting to stroke and play with her! It took us twice as long hahaha. She loves all the attention though!! :)

Ughhh leash training is going to kill me too lol. I agree I thought potty training would be harder.... I was wrong! Hahaha! The only thing that has really helped me is working on the "look at me when I call your name" command, and the "leave it" command.

I find that the difficulty in leash training isn't so much the actual walk, as much as it is the distraction situation! It's so true that you can't go more than 20 feet without someone obsessively freaking out over your dog....They LOVE the attention, and I DONT! only because I want him to walk! Haha.

Rico doesn't have the "look at me when I call your name" down fully... But when that does work, then I can successfully get his attention and get him to walk... "Heel" would be so foreign to him at this point lol...

I think what is also helping, is to be more stubborn than him... I refuse to pick him up anymore...it wasn't doing us any good to get him used to being accommodated, aside from that he's nearly 15 lbs now and your arm can go dead!

Not sure how old Trixie is, but I can tell you that Rico at 5 months (tomorrow) is showing improvement, certainly not a stellar walker, but definitely has improved....I'm assuming and hoping that it will only get better!

Yes I know people are just being friendly but it's difficult when i'm trying to get her to listen and she's so distracted because people keep playing or stroking her, she is cute though! hahaha

I'm also trying not to carry her as much too just because we currently live in an apartment and we carry her down the stairs to go outside, we've started using the lift, making her sit and wait to go in, etc because soon she'll be too heavy for me to carry :( i wish she'd stay this small forever!!

Think I just have to be patient with the leash training situation and it'll slowly improve with treats and praise like everything else!

Please please be patient! I wish I could turn back time. Stitch is so mean right now he has leash aggression and it's the worst thing in this world. [emoji20][emoji17]

No worries, I am definitely being patient, she loves the outside and the whole walk makes me smile (getting tied up in the leash as well!) But just didn't want to start bad habits :) oh no!! how has he got leash aggression?? how did it happen? What do you think went wrong so I can avoid doing the same? x

First of all, most of the dogs cannot master 'heel' command until they are at least 6-7 month. Some dogs doing better with harness rather then collar (and some even need a front hook harness). You can watch a video on youtube how to train them to obey the command, but start with a few steps. If puppy did walk a few steps properly, repeat 'heel' and reward the pup. Next time, do few more steps. At first, you might need to keep a treat in front of the puppy to keep him interested. The problem with frenchie is that you have to bend a lot since they are so short. My back is killing me from carrying him down the steps and training him to walk. Good luck!
