Letâs face itâmost of our Frenchies are better known for their feats of slumber than their feats of athleticism. Sure, theyâll get an attack of the zoomies here and there, but for the most part theyâre bat-eared, stubby-tailed couch potatoes.
And then thereâs Luc.
Itâs not that Luc doesnât enjoy a nap or a good snuggle with his people. Heâs a goofy, sweet boy who excels at Frenchie cuddles and snorts of endearment. But first, this black-masked dynamo would like to go for a walk. Or jog. Or run. And if there are trees to sniff and squirrels to chase and adventures to be had, then all the better! Luc is a healthy, playful, super-energetic Frenchie who would thrive with an equally active family.
In typical bulldog fashion, Luc can be a bit headstrongâif left to his own devices, he will take his person for a walk, rather than vice versa. With gentle and consistent reminders, Luc slows down and remembers that leash-pulling is a good way to get nowhere fast. This, too, is typical bulldog fashionâLuc loves his people and would do anything to please them!
What Luc doesnât love so much are other dogs, particularly large ones. He was surrendered to FBRN for fighting with his St. Bernard brother, and while in foster care he has continued to display unfriendly behavior toward other dogs. This is particularly the case when food is involvedâLuc has a history of food aggression and will attack dogs who try to steal a nibble of what is rightfully his. For this reason, Luc will only be placed in a dog-free home. Similarly, while Luc has reacted positively to the kitties who have crossed his path, we have to say no to cats, given his high prey drive and history of aggression. Fortunately, Lucâs unseemly behavior is limited toward those of the canine persuasion. He adores people and is great with dog-savvy, older kids who donât run the risk of being bowled over like pins.
Since his behavior with other dogs is unpredictable and his energy level high, Luc would not do well in a workplace setting. But that biscuit money has to come from somewhere, so Luc doesnât mind being left at home, so long as he gets a mid-day potty break. Luc can be crated for short periods of time (less than four hours), but after that, his anxiety gets the better of him and he tries to break his way out. Luc promises that you can trust him with the run of the house while youâre awayâhe hasnât had a single accident since his time in foster care (nor has he thrown a crazy 80âs-style party).
A first-time Frenchie owner would suit Luc just fine, and he would be happy in either a house or an apartment. But because he has so much energy, Luc would do best in a home with a fenced yard, where he would have plenty of room to romp about. If you are an applicant who does not have a fenced yard, please be sure to explain how you would ensure that Luc gets the exercise he needs, given that he must avoid contact with other dogs.
