Hello, Just saying hello with our little "Mad Gal" aka the brindle? potato, baby rhinoceros.

10 week female - ~3.5 pounds of spunk

Should add, I am a frenchie newbie, a puppy newbie, but have had dogs before.

My questions so far
1. Breeder fed Royal Canin, so we stuck with it as she seems to do ok and vet said that or Hill Science diet was good. I read on here it's not great. I also am confused by the feeding guide that provides the amounts by expected adult weight. she's tiny, but mom was ~15 pounds, so I am going by that. Seems weird to me to go by a somewhat unknown future weight. Is there anyone on here who does feed RC "small puppy"? She would eat and eat and eat.
2. Man, the peeing everywhere is driving me crazy. It has gotten better but she definitely is peeing smaller amounts in between "big pees". Whenever I take her out and ask for potty, she squats and squirts something, but maybe with her small size, she is still not controling herself?
3. very round belly! normal?
4. The ultimate/dreaded pet insurance question. I understand she may need costly stuff down the road, but I am looking to hear from people who have an opinion either way about not getting insurance. Our quote is ~$60 per month, which over say even 10 years is over ~$7,000 in just premium. Are people spending that much money over that in the pup's life? When can you have a guess whether they need the palate or other major surgery that frenchies sometimes need?

Thanks!
Amy

Welcome and congrats, she is a cutie. We used to feed our pups FROMM Puppy Gold in the pink bag. It is a good food. She needs to eat at least three or four times a day for a while. In a few months go to 3 times a day. At 7 months of age go to twice a day feeding and switch to adult food. A good way to figure out the amount of food right now is gauge it by their poops. If the poops are kind of hard, feed more. If they are too soft feed a little less. Their poops right now should be kind of like soft serve ice cream. They are growing and developing now, so they need plenty of good food and water. Leave fresh water out and available 24/7. Some people say to restrict water at night time to help with potty training. That is a myth and should not be done. Once they get close to 5 or 6 months, then you can go by the weight the bag says. We feed FROMM 4 star adult food and our females get 1/2 cup twice a day. I would have her checked for a UTI since she is peeing little spots between her normal pees. The very round belly could be worms, I would have a vet check that. They do have round bellies, but not very large. I don't have insurance on mine, so I am of no help there. Hope this helps.

I do have have insurance and for me it has been well worth it. Jax is 7 and was diagnosed with IVDD in 2017. He’s had 3 surgeries totaling over $20,000 and that doesn’t include other expenses. With the plan I have, there’s a $250 deductible per year and then I get 90% of covered claims reimbursed.
