I took Fitz to the vet today to get neutered. When I was talking to the vet he recommended opening his nasal passages (just the nostril opening) so that he could get more air in. I honestly wasn't expecting to do this today plus it's the first I ever heard of it. He explained that it was a simple procedure and it was best to do it while Fitz was already knocked out. I know he is knowledgeable on the breed because he owns English bulldogs - I think he might breed them as well.

Anyway - I told him to go ahead and do it. Has anyone else had this done? What is the recovery like. I'm getting a little anxious as I am not good with quick decisions. :(

Any info is greatly appreciated.

I have heard of it and I would trust you vet if he is already a bulldog expert. I'm sure the surgery will be a success and Fitz will breath easier. :)

Our bulldog vet told me that they do look for that while they're being neutered, along with the palette. They get your permission before and make the decision during surgery. I think it's pretty normal, and sounds like it does help.

yes, Cheli had this done during his palate surgery... it is the widening of the nares.... VERY common in Bulldogs and it help them get more air without a struggle, you will not notice it visually after it is done and stitches are out, but you'll see a difference in his breathing

Thanks everyone. I picked up Fitz this afternoon and he is doing well. I was seriously freaking out that I shouldn't have agreed w/o doing more research. I have to say he sounds better already. I will give you guys an update in about a week. I don't want to post a before/after pick until it heals a bit. (I have a weak stomach!)

Ok. Now we have near constant runny nose followed by projectile snorting. HALP!! MEEEEE! :bad::angry::stinkeye:

SOS,
Lucy

We had that done on one of our English a few years back, and it help his breathing. The recovery was nothing, as you could hardly tell anything was done, unless you looks closely. Your little guy will be all good in about a week or so.
