My dog is 2 years old we never neutered him because he does not spray or hump anything or our other dog. Vet recommend neutering and surgery to open his nose up. Is there any reason to get him neutered and have this surgery if he breathes fine and does not spray or hump? Ive read the health benefits are mostly for females?

If he doesn't have any annoying behaviors, and you can keep him away from females in heat, I see no reason to neuter him. Does your vet do vasectomies? That could be another option, if you wanted to have him sterilized, but wanted to keep his hormones intact.

males can, at a later age, develop bladder/kidney stones and potential cancer. There was a thread about it on our sister site English Bulldog news... I'll see if I can find it and link it for you

Ok thanks the only other dogs he os around are male and one female who is fixed. What about the nose surgery?

If you are saying that he breathes fine, I would get a second vet opinion. Whether or not to have nares surgery would be so specific to the individual dog.

Snoring? If not and they sleep fine -- I wouldn't
Watch the sides of their nose; if it does not flare in and out when they breathe,
there really is zero reason if they also don't snore.

There really isn't too much of a health reason to neuter male if he isn't aggressive or humping, but you may need to neuter him for doggie daycare or kennel. If you decide to do the surgery you should take him to vet with bulldog experience to see if he needs soft palate reduction or nostril widening done at same time. My bulldog snores and she's very healthy and about 8-9 years old and she's never had any nostril widening or soft palate reduction, but if she needed any surgery I would get her evaluated for that as well.

If he is breathing fine and no trouble, then I would not do the surgery. The neutering is totally up to you. They can sometimes develop problems later in life, but some never do. You can always neuter later if something comes up.

Sorry -- forgot about the nares. There is new research that came out showing that opening nares at a younger age has helped in lessening the stress on the palate -- we did our Bulldog, Lambeau at 16 weeks, just nares.... he is now 3 yrs old, does not snore and has little issues when he is playing or running. if the vet has determine his nares are tight, it may be worth doing it now to possibly avoid issues later

My vet also recommended the surgery however this particular vet doesn't specialize or has a lot of Frenchies arrive at the clinic. Not all vets are the same and that could be why many vets who don't quite know the breed recommend this nasal surgery.
