Hi everyone.. quick question on puppy fertility.

We have two frenchies living together.. a 5 year old female and 7 months male puppy, none of them neutered. (we are not looking to neuter anytime soon either, due to multiple reasons).

Our main concern is that our female is now in heat and really seeking attention from our puppy. He is also very keen on trying to mate, it's been his main hobby for the last two - three months, however until recently she did not permit any such behavior.

While we are home we will not permit any behavior like this, however the dogs are on their own in the yard for 8-9 hours a day while we are at work. Do you think Lucian,7 months old puppy could be fertile and impregnate her during this time? At what age do they become fertile?

I would like to know, if it's already necessary to keep them separated in the coming 2 weeks.

Thanks!

I also realize, that this is not a typical frenchie related question and more of general dog development question. I read online that male puppies become sexually mature anytime between 7-10 months. I even read something about 3 months. Anyway, it's clear that they should be kept separated. If you have any other tips, please let me know. I appreciate it.

I'm thinking yes.. seperate davidh

On an unrelated note....you mentioned they are in the yard for a number of hours while you are at work. I'm not sure if the case is the same where you live but dog theft is a big problem here. I would be super careful about leaving them outside!

I was going to say the same about leaving them outside......

also aren't you not supposed to leave a female dog while she is in heat outside unattended? she could be attacked could she not? I think other dogs and animals can sense it

MamaAndi Thanks for the tip, we live in a rather small and safe neighbourhood, it's 50 homes with single entry and gated entrance. This was never a poblem.

hannah i will consider this, however the house has a 2m fence, so i think only birds would have access in the yard. We're not too worried about this either.

By the way, since i posted, we went to the vet, who prescribed some birth control pills. He said there is no need to keep them separated once treatment is initiated. Treatment lasts about a week. I'm curious if they will impact her mood in any way. Will let you know about any results.

Bests

Birth control pills for dogs!????

I was just as surprised. They are a viable option for dogs that don't do well under surgery. Her temper is back to normal after 2 days
