So Henry weighed in at 26lbs this past Sunday, which dosage of Sentinel do you guys think i should order for the upcoming warm season?
11-25lbs
26-50lbs

thanks

Do you expect him to gain more weight or be steady at 26 pounds?

That's kind of a tough one. Technically he would be in the 26-50 pound range so I would assume you would go with that. But it's only a pound or two difference so potentially the lesser weight one would work as well. I guess I would probably call the vet and ask them their thoughts to be on the safe side.

hes not a fan of heart worm preventatives! Lol I’m leaning towards the lighter dosage. Thanks for your input.

In colder climates you don't need heartworm protection till June. Sentinel is good for heartworm prevention but is only a flea birth control (not good for an infestation ) without any tick protection. If you have a flea and tick problem in your area I would give either oral Nexgard or topical Vectra 3D or K9 Advantix II until June, then add some heartworm protection at that time.

I would do 26 to 50 BUT I live in the south where fleas and mosquitos will carry you off if you aren't careful lol.

I would be too.... I give Cheli the 25 pound and he hoovers between 24-26 pounds

I would actually challenge the need for Heartworm "Prevention" at all.

My current Frenchies do not get flea, tick or Heartworm as these are all poisons.

There is some very clear studies that Heartworm prevention is unnecessary and Heartworm testing would provide
just as much effectiveness.

Heartworm cycle and mosquitoes must be understood, as @Honeys Owner pointed out;
Most areas don't require Heartworm (Mosquito) protection until June.

Frenchies specifically can really benefit from limited poison, chemicals and vaccinations.

The following document from Doctor Dobias DVM, this has the map for Mosquito lifecycle.

The Heartworm drug companies are the ones suggesting monthly.
The dosage is also doubled than what is needed because they assume you will forget.
Continual Heartworm "prevention" has created Heartworm medication resistant worms.

Make informed decisions and not just follow the Heartworm drug companies.

I test my girls twice a year for Heartworm.

Just my 2 cents.

I would go with the higher dosage, this is what our vet recommends.

The doses used for prevention of heartworm ( just killing the immature larvae in blood ) are much lower than doses used to kill the adult worm. Since I live in a cold climate I feel comfortable dosing my dog 4 times a year, ie. June 1, August 1, Oct 1 and Dec 1. I like to use the tablet form, either milbemycin or ivermectin, since it's out of the body in a day. Topical heartworm meds such as Revolution or Advantage Multi stay around for a month. But if I didn't have to worry about ticks I would probably use Advantage Multi for convenience since it takes care of most worms including heartworms and fleas for a month. So I have been currently giving the milbemycin every 2 months along with topical K9 Advantage II monthly , although I have read that Vectra 3D is better than K9 Advantage II.
