Hi All!

I'm new to the group and looking forward to being a part of this community. I have a question about stenotic nare surgery. Our girl, Maizy, will be 5 in December. I have her scheduled for surgery on Oct 12. My uncle is a wonderful vet and will be performing the surgery. He lives an hour away so I have another vet for every day issues and use my uncle for the major stuff. I'm just really nervous about it and would love to hear from others about their experiences. I brought her to my uncle about 2 years ago and he said she didn't need the surgery at that point. Our main vet is telling us we should probably have it done soon at this point. We are moving states at the end of Oct and I only trust my uncle, so want to get it done before the moving craziness starts. How long was the recovery for your babies? Would anyone mind sharing before and after pics? (and by after pics I mean once they are healed, not necessarily right after the surgery). I'm curious what her "new" little nose will look like. I'm currently pregnant with my second human baby and the hormones are not helping my emotions about this. I cry when I think about my fur baby having to go through this. Any advice/encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

I'm sure you have checked, but make sure your uncle has done several of these surgeries on Frenchies or English bullies, and uses the right anesthesia. We have never had this done on a frenchie, but did have it done on an English bulldog once. The surgery went well and the recovery was fast. It only took about 7 days for him to be healed up and good as new. Plus we did not put him in the cone of shame, our vet who is a bully specialist said we didn't need it.

Thank you! Great to know your English bulldog had such a good recovery. Yes, thankfully my uncle is very experienced with bullies. He performed her spay as well. And many of the Frenchie breeders in the area only trust him with their c-sections ;)

My Frenchie had hers done a few months ago. By the night of the surgery, she acted like nothing had ever happened.

Wow! That's great!! How old is she? I'm wondering if 5 years is getting on the older side of being able to bounce back so quickly? Did it change her looks considerably?

Dexter had 3 surgeries at once, but if it was just his nares he would have been healed up extremely fast. And he only had 2 little dissolvable stitches in each nostril. He was 9 month or so when we did it. Here are a couple of pics.

Hopefully you can see those ok :)

Our Cheli had his done twice... he was about 2 yrs old. He recovered great both times

Hi All!

Just following up on this and would appreciate any feedback regarding recovery time. Maizy had her surgery last Wednesday. My uncle (the vet) said to leave her in the cone for 5 days, which would technically mean we could remove tonight. She seems so miserable in it so we gave her a few minutes closely supervised without it yesterday. All she wanted to do was rub her face in the carpet! So obviously the cone went right back on. I am planning on taking it off before bed tonight (she sleeps in bed with us so not as worried about damage she could do in middle of night). The problem is, we leave town on Wednesday. We have hired a house sitter because we don't want to make her travel yet, and we don't want to board her. She'll be alone a lot during the day time though. At that point we'll be one week post-surgery. Should I be worried and leave her cone on her? Or is that enough healing time that not much damage could be done? How long did the dissolvable stitches stay in for y'all? He said to come back after 10-12 days if she still has them. Thanks! I can always call and ask him, but he's super busy and I like to hear first hand from other Frenchie parents who have been through this as well! Oh also-how long did it look red and tender inside the nostrils? She hasn't bled at all but it still looks kind of raw inside, like it hasn't really started to scab over or anything. Wondering what's normal for that....I guess it makes sense since it's prob pretty moist inside the nose!

If he is rubbing his face then leave the cone on... we had dissolveable stitches too and they were gone in about two weeks. We were very lucky as we never had to use the cone-- he left them alone. As for the redness, it slowly disappeared after about 10 days

Thank you for the info! This was helpful and makes me feel better about her overall progress so far.

So Nellie had this surgery done almost two weeks ago too. And i took the cone off her because she wasn't doing anything to her stitches. Then i took her outside for a potty and within two minutes she went digging in the soil, buried her face in it and her dissolvable stitches came out! so now she has two pink nubs inside her nose. the vet things they'll heal and go away. keep the cone on her if you can

Oh my goodness!! Poor thing. Yes, Maizy likes to dig too. I can see her doing that. How long after the surgery was that?

A week afterwards. It has made her nostrils look funny. We are heading in for a recheck this Friday. i'll see what the vet says. I could only keep her calm for two days after her discharge. She is full of beans and coz she was couped up inside she had extra energy, hence the frantic digging lol

Please keep me posted on how she's doing! Hope the vet says all will be fine for her!
I took Maizy's cone off for about 15 minutes today and she didn't really go after her nose, but she was licking/chewing her paws so much during that time that it did make one of the stitches come out on one side :/ Looks a little funny but I'm hoping it's still just because it's healing. Not bleeding or anything so I don't think the stitch coming out did any tearing. He had told me to take her in to have the stitches removed if they hadn't dissolved after about 10 days so I'm HOPING it's only natural that one did actually come out on day 6? Ugh the worry over these little feisty babies!
