Lucy, my 9 year old Frenchie, has been drooling extensively out of the left side of her mouth a lot. It first started happening once every 6 months. Then became more and more frequent. Now if is almost every other day. I have done blood work and had stool samples tested and everything comes back normal. I have tried reading things online and I became overwhelmed. I assume it is something with her acid reflux or esophagus. I have already spent a good bit of money and cannot spend much more at the moment. So I am hoping to get some tips and advice to help her. Thanks in advance!

I don't have any experience with this but if it is acid reflux, you can try giving a Pepcid to see if that helps.

As Citty suggested, try some antacid meds .. I usually by the store brand which is a small amount like 1mg, I think or it might be 10mg... need to check when I get home.

If this doesn't help, it might be pain of some type.... did they do any x-rays to check her back or hips?

I give her Pepcid AC 10mg every so often, I'm just not sure if it is ok to give her this daily. I did not get X-rays done. Can you maybe explain how her back and hips would cause the drooling? Thank you for helping!

It is fine to give once daily.

Back/hips... drooling is sometimes related to pain. My boy has spine issues and when it bothers him, he drools. We have since implemented monthly laser therapy sessions and he hasn't had any drooling episodes since. The pain can be arthritis so if you have the funds think about an x-ray just to check it all out

Oh wow! Thank you for the info, I will definitely give my vet a call to see what the $$ damage will be.

Sometimes drooling can also be caused by anxiety. Jax gets car sick and he used to drool excessively when in the car.

As suggested, an X-ray might be a good idea.

Not to hijack the thread, but did Jax grow out of it? This was Gus when we arrived at the vet just the other day.

Sorry, just had to share that pic. :D

The vet gave us some Cerenia to try before our next outing, but I've been thinking that it's anxiety more than true motion sickness now. So, I'm not even sure if it will work or not. He started vomiting before we were even out of the neighborhood. He used to lick the air when he started feeling ill, now he drools like a mad man.

Yes and no. He doesn’t drool as much and he still hates being in the car. He doesn’t mind when we go to daycare but that is less than 10 minutes away. He used to tremble as well. Now if the ride is longer than 15 minutes, there is a good chance he will vomit. He’s 4 now and started getting sick probably the third time he ever got in the car.

How old is Gus? If he’s young, he can grow out of it. Another thing you can try is to recondition him. Bring him in the car and just sit there with him giving him treats. Do that a few times then you start the car, sit there, give treats. Then you work your way up to a drive around the block, etc.

My practice now is to just always lay towels down on the floor surrounding Jax’s car seat. Much easier to clean up!

Gus is almost 6 months old. He's been getting sick since he was small. It started happening after we left the vet after his puppy visits and, at first, I thought it was the dewormer upsetting his tummy. However, he quickly started vomiting on the way to the vet, as well.

Before this last trip, clean up wasn't a big deal. I would just put a towel in his booster seat which caught the mess. I didn't realize how much he'd grown since the last visit, though. He is now big enough to lean over the edge. Lol

I'd considered re conditioning him before, but hadn't thought about just sitting in the car and not going anywhere. That sounds like a good place to start. Thanks

Jax was about 12 weeks old when he started. He has gotten better but the vomiting still happens if he’s in the car for too long. I make sure he hasn’t eaten hours before. And I never leave home without the towels!!

I'm thinking it could also be caused by pain. Hopefully your vet can figure it out.
