Our Frenchie started having a cat urine odor to her skin/hair. The smell was only on her you could pet her and the smell would not transfer to anything else. After bath she would smell good and within a day the smell would reappear. I started researching and found some dog foods may react with the dogs system and cause this smell. We are transitioning from TOTW to Orijen and she is doing great and the smell has decreased. It was a first for us as all our dogs have always used TOTW.

I am curious has anyone else ever had this happen?

Sounds like it was a yeast overgrowth.
Dogs have a naturally high build up on yeast (like women),so when you feed a kibble high in carbohydrates, which then turn into sugar, the yeast will thrive and it will come to an overgrowth.

This is the exact reason I'm in the process of switching Poppy's diet. I've got her on raw at night which she loves and I'm switching her to Acana in the morning as soon as her current food is finished (annameat option 24%).

I've definitely noticed a difference with the raw already and it's only been a week so I'm really hopeful the change of diet is exactly what she needed :)

You're not alone!

What shampoo are you using? I'd look into an antiseptic or antimicrobial shampoo to kill the build up of yeast on the skin. I personally use Douxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo because I got it from the vet and it works really well. Kept Poppy smelling great for a week before I could start switching her diet.

I also alternate adding yogurt, fish oil, coconut oil, and kelp to feedings which seem to help as well :)

agreed!

I would look for a grain and white potato free kibble .... I had to do this for one of my bulldogs and once I removed grains/potato he yeast issues were under control

Dexter also smelled terrible when his allergies first started to appear. And I knew each time his skin was about to start being problematic because I could smell it before seeing anything. It's mostly under control now with his food, so I hope that works well for you too.

Thanks for the responses everyone!! She is definitely smelling better:D

We were feeding her TOTW puppy (grain free) and have been in the process of switching to Orijen puppy (which is also grain free). The smell of our little Miss Reese is a lot better.

For shampoo we use Veterinary Formula antiseptic and antifungal medicated shampoo every other bath alternating with John Paul pet oatmeal shampoo. I personally swear by the Veterinary Formula shampoos. I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that the smell continues to disappear.

I used John Paul oatmeal because I got it on sale super cheap!

Switched back to johnsons and johnsons oatmeal instead and there was a huge improvement of my dogs skin and fur quality! (My girl was getting flaky)

Glad to see all these stinky dogs have stopped being so stinky! ;)
