I need some help understanding Daisy's play style.

This weekend we added an 8 week old male English Bulldog (Hank) to our family...(I'm pretty sure we are absolutely crazy!!!) Daisy, my 5 month old Frenchie, has adjusted OK. Everyday she is doing better.

We do almost everything with each dog separately and right now, Hank, is crate training and using an x pen to keep him in a small area. We've been allowing small play sessions (10 minutes at a time about twice a day) with the dogs. Daisy seems eager to play as does Hank but Daisy is so rough with him. She grabs folds of his skin around his face and tugs and pulls. She also does a lot of open mouth snorting. Hank is learning to dish his fair share and seems to continue to pursue her even when it is obvious that she hurt him.

This is our first time owning these two breeds so I'm unsure if their play is acceptable. I watched a you tube video of a Frenchie and English playing but they were older and had probably been around each other their whole lives. I know that Hank will soon top her in weight and that could change things but I'm more concerned with how to approach things in the present. I don't want either dog to get hurt but I do want to see them get along.

I have a few questions. Should I be restricting their play time? Should they be playing more/less? Does it just seem bad because Hank is so young? Should I intervene when Daisy gets out of hand? Any insight is welcome.

Frenchies and English Bulldogs love to rough play. Pull on ears, each other's wrinkles etc. As long as they are both playing without one getting hurt, to me it sounds like puppy play. Watch that someone doesn't get too rough and monitor their play until they are more familiar. Congrats on the new puppy!!

I think twice a day for 10 minutes isn't enough time together! I think you should allow them to be together more and try to give the command "gentle" if things get too rough and pull one away from the other. Hopefully someone here will have more insight with the English and Frenchie mix. We have two Frenchies. They do have a rougher playing style than lots of dogs for sure.. bulldogs in general

I agree... i think you should let them spend more time together. And you should try to be as relaxed as possible around them so you don't pass on any negative energy to you larger frenchie. She will adjust with the new puppy, but i think this play is now setting the dynamic of the relationship. When we added lou (6/7 weeks old) our larger frenchie was quite dominant, but after spending enough time together they both adjusted and created a new dynamic, each of them knows their limit with respect to the other.

Enjoy you puppies, they will make a great team (didn't want to say couple) :))!

An English bully and a French bully!!!! You guys are so lucky they are going to be best friends!! :)

Bella has an English bully friend named Cleopatra and they go hard!!!! They tug and pull on each other, grab each others legs, they will play for hours and hours. It always seems that once one is exhausted the other is ready to go again and vice versa.

I would let them play it out so they can find each others boundaries! Of course watch for exertion, and make sure they're not hurting each other. But once again they are doggies and this is what they do :).

I've let Bella and Cleo play for hours before (maybe a little too long) thinking they would just play each other out! Not the case. But they only see each other monthly, so I usually just let them duke it out :)

It deff sounds like puppy play! I say let them have fun and tire each other out :) But that's just me!

Please share photos!

I want to thank all of you for your encouragement. It has meant the world to me. Yesterday was really hard. My emotions were all over the place (Hello Hormones!!!) and we are all still out of sorts with adding the new puppy. It has only been 5 days since we got him but it feels like those 5 days have lasted forever!! I know things will continue to improve. Both dogs will be loved and we'll cared for and we are so happy to have them in our lives.

I will have the puppies spend more time together and hopefully they will figure things out soon!!!

Hopefully these pictures work!!! If you are on instagram both dogs have an account if you want to follow their journey: [MENTION=1589]Daisy[/MENTION]_sassy_pants and @the_hankster_

OMG --- he is precious!! :blowkiss::loveeyes::loveeyes: I will have to post some videos of Cheli and Lambeau having fun when we first got Lambeau.... they beat the crap out of each other but there have never been any injury or problem. When one has had enough, they somehow let the other know and they go to their corners, per say ;)

OMG!! They are SOOO cute together!! I already follow you on IG and I'm looking forward to seeing more pics of both puppies.

I think you are just overwhelmed with having 2 babies in the house. Definitely let them play together more often and intervene if it seems they are getting out of hand. They usually can go this themselves with each other though. Good luck with the 2 pups!

Your new baby is sooooo cute. When we added Stella to the family Jake was 10 mos. and she would pull and hang from Jake's jowls, growling. We would grab her by the scuff of the neck sometimes and remove her if we felt poor Jake had just about had enough. I just wanted to make sure things didn't go too far because Jake is so laid back and it all worked out in the end. Hang in there, puppyhood is exhausting.

Hopefully this works. I took a video of the two of them playing this morning. I wanted to see what you all think. I might just be paranoid but I'm concerned about Daisy. This is how they play when we let them out together. Most of the time, Hank gets to the point that he starts to find places to hide because he's had enough. Daisy just won't quit. She never seems to "turn off". She's always on and on high...all the time. Is this normal for a Frenchie? Is it her age? More than once, they've gotten to the point that they get into an actual fight and we have to pull them apart. We have allowed them to spend more time together. Some play times are just play fighting and we just separate them when we see signs that Hank has had enough.

TOTALLY NORMAL!!!! Daisy is 'play bowing' which means inviting play! They are great.... And Daisy is just like Cheli... His non-stop/quit attitude is typical frenchie and exactly why i call Cheli. ' The Gnat' [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Wally used to hide under the couch from Uma all the time. The first time he realized he couldn't fit anymore he looked absolutely terrified. haha! Uma was standing behind him like 'ummm, I'm right behind you...'and then she would attack. LOL!

100% normal!!! They will play and play fight and they will get closer as time goes on and end up lounging and napping together and then playing all over again. The life of a bulldog!

Sometimes if it seems mine are playing too rough I just say "gentle" and try to teach them that command as a way to either quiet them or just slow down. Other than That I leave them be.. they will stop when they are over it or tired.

Cheli hides behind the couch from Lambeau.... just far enough that he can not reach him -- it is hysterical, as Lambeau gets so frustrated that he goes real high pitch with his bark.... like he is screaming at Cheli
