I was out taking Hudson for his after dinner walk. A young girl (probably around 5) whose English wasn't quite perfect approached me and seemed to be scared of Hudson but very curious. I let her pet him and thank goodness he's a well behaved puppy because she was jumping all around him. She eventually asked what I interpreted (like I said, not perfect English) as wanting to hold the leash. As soon as I let her, thinking she just wanted to hold it, she took off running!!

35 minutes later after chasing her around my apartment complex with my step father's business partner (who happened to be visiting his son next door and watched the whole thing go down), we caught up to her and finally convinced her to give Hudson back to me..

She tried to demand my address and told me she would be coming over any time she wanted!! No parents to be seen, and my apartment complex leases exclusively to college students, so I don't know what the heck was going on there.

It was a very strange (and scary!) experience. I will never be handing Hudson over to anyone ever again!! He is exhausted from all of that running around which included her asking him to jump up and then pushing him off so he fell down backwards on the pavement!! Poor thing. Now I understand the previous post on here about pet peeves with their dogs! I might be a little scarred after this one.

That's awful!!! I'm sorry you had to deal with that!! I don't know why but our little guys definitely seem to attract the most "interesting" people. :(

That's scary! I also don't understand why people want to rough house with my little girl. Why do people think it's cute to rough her head up when they pet her! I have one friends who's mission is to make her bark or growl. I want to have a dog that loves everyone but I don't understand what they are thinking. I have had to saw no quite a few times to kids wanting to play (including my own) when I know they would get her to keyed up and turn heimage.jpg

OMG poor Hudson, what a frightening experience for both of you! I would of made my mission to find out where this girls parent were and give it them both barrels!!

We had an 'experience' with a young child too, with our puppy Border Terrier, he is 3 wks younger than Dave. I was walking with my husband and both pups when a little girl about 4yrs old got out of a car but wouldnt go into the house because she wanted to see the pups, anyway she sat on the floor with them whilst we spoke to her grandma, the next thing we heard Brendan squeal, she had hold of both his front paws and was squeezing them! So in a not to sound angry voice (which i dont think i managed) i said ' don't do that it hurts him!'
If she had been 20yrs older i'd of slapped her!

So it shows to be on your guard with children!

The first day I had Deuce a girl got out of her car asked to pet him proceeded to tell me she always wanted a Frenchie and asked me how much I paid for him! So frightening.

Omg how scary! I am so sorry that you and Hudson had to go through this.

But why exactly is a 5 year old running around without any parents close by?

Honestly I would have asked her to bring me to her parents or I would have called the police and tell them I found a lost child who btw tried to steal my pup. This is really weird.
What if her parents make her steal dogs and then they sell them or use them for a puppy mill or something...I know this is maybe total nonsense but I would defintely keep an eye open and if you see her again approach her and ask for the adress or if she cant tell you call the police.

Oh good grief!! Poor Hudson! What an experience and glad you got him back.......

Yeah, no one has control over my babies except me! :fie:

What is wrong with kids today??!! Little brat!

How frightening. Sounds like a groomed child thief. You're very lucky you found him!

I feel bad for the person who tries this with Bear. My husband has already had to chase and 'subdue' a creep in our complex while I called the police, and I fear with Bear he may not be so lenient. Lol.

 holy cow.... lesson learned for sure.

Thank you! And yes, you're definitely right on that one. I got quite a lesson in not being so trusting..

Definitely learned a big one. Can't believe how gutsy people are today, especially if this was a case of them grooming a child to be a dog thief. Makes me sad.

Can you have pepper spray legally in the States? Its illegal in the UK for normal people to have, though i wish it wasn't.

In many states you can legally shoot someone with a gun if you feel threatened (stand your ground laws), so yes pepper spray is definitely allowed!

Haha maybe letting me loose with a gun would be a bad idea

Wow! I'm so glad that Hudson is ok! Like you said before, now that other thread makes more sense. People do and say the strangest things to me when I have Fitz with me. It's really weird. I can pretty much count on saying to my daughter "Did that just happen?" Usually people are just curious and I have never had to run after anyone. Luckily it was just a 5 year old so no guns or pepper spray were needed.

Wow - Just catching up with all of this! Glad both you and Hudson are OK. Definitely a lesson... thanks for sharing with the rest of us how a seemingly innocuous request could go so wrong. Good for you for getting in touch with the other girl.

Glad you caught her and got him back. I would have held her and called the cops for theft. Teach that little sh$$ a lesson.

Yes it is legal, although in California they technically regulate the size of the container, potency of content, etc.

That being said...my husband equips each of my bags/purses with police-grade tactical pepper spray that shoots up to 12 feet and stains the perpetrator

I've gotten some weird things, but no potential dog nappings! People sure get weird around frenchies haha. Though before I had one I was that person who went "ohhhh my gosh a Frenchie!!!" So I totally get those people.

Thank you, me too! I was definitely in panic mode thinking about what would happen if someone actually stole my little guy -- especially as she tried to dash into an apartment with him! Definitely a big lesson for me!

I thought about it. I think I was just in shock and so happy to have Hudson back relatively unscathed. Although the thought him being drug across the pavement because he can't run fast enough still makes me cringe. Poor baby.

Haha my mother was the purchaser of my pepper spray. I usually walk Hudson alone late at night so he can hold it until the morning. Even with security guards I get nervous and it's definitely a feeling of added security to have pepper spray on you! Though knowing me I'd probably inadvertently spray myself.

I bet you understand why you occasionally see people post about preferring dogs over children too. I'm not one of those people but I understand when I read it. Was she laughing and running or trying to take him? I would have called authorities, I don't care how old she was. Some people shouldn't reproduce. She obviously hasn't been taught how to act.
