Hi everyone!

I recently rehomed the most adorable and comical little potato! He's just over 9 months old and will be getting neutered next week. Our vet called and recommended that during his neutering they also do nares and palate surgery. From your experiences, is this surgery better to have as a preventative thing? Or can we wait until we start to see signs of issues to have the surgery for him? He seems fine right now - no troubles breathing or eating at all. He snores when he sleeps, but nothing too major.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Can you post a picture of your boy so we can see his nares? Has your vet evaluated his nares and palate or is he just wanting to do the surgery because he’s in there.

Not all pups need these done unless there are issues; my boy he is now seven had his nares done three times and his pallet done twice

Hi there-
Without knowing any other info, I get the impression that your vet is recommending the additional surgery because Bentley will already be under anesthesia?

But, with him being only 9 months and presenting no breathing difficulties, I'd personally not address it at this time. You could always get a second opinion from a vet with specific knowledge of bulldogs. Or, if you really like your regular vet, just ask him or her to clarify why the surgery is being recommended when your dog is having no issues breathing or eating.

Good luck and hope his neuter goes well and is uneventful :)

I'd wait at lest until he is a year or 2 old to get the palate and/or nares done and then only if needed.

Thank you for the responses everyone! I got a second opinion from another vet who was not keen on doing his nares/palate surgery now when he is not having any trouble breathing or eating. He also mentioned that in the long run, he may only need nares surgery and in some french bulldog cases they may never need the surgery at all.

And yes - our previous vet wanted to get it done because he would be under anesthesia and it would be a convenient procedure. We really like our previous vet (it's a lovely environment and everyone there is so friendly) but have decided to switch to our second opinion vet as they are much more affordable (the cost of a consultation is 1/3 the price of our original vet). The facility isn't as pretty and fancy but it is clean and the vet we saw was very kind and knowledgeable and the front desk mentioned they see many frenchies there.

I just dropped him off for his neutering! Missing him so much and hoping he will have a speedy recovery!

My guy will be 6 in April and has not had any surgery for his nares/palate. Not all bulldogs need it but there are some vets that think they do and are just looking to make money. To do a surgery just for convenience is not a good vet IMO. Surgery should be done if it's needed. A knowledgeable vet on bulldogs is a must with this breed.

Both my guys bounced right back the next day after getting neutered.

We were told by two different vets that our two-year-old boy needs nares surgery. Probably soft palate, too. Since we lost our 11 1/2 girl to a negligent vet because she aspirated during surgery and the vet did nothing - just sent her home - I am very scared. His breeder says there is nothing wrong with his nares, but they look practically closed and though he sleeps without hardly snoring, he does wake up frequently during the night to clear his throat and does over heat easily. I don't want him to have problems when he is older. Also, we never have had insurance - just wondering if it's a good idea to get it now, or would it not cover the surgery anyway. Thanks everyone!

roligrant, pics of your baby, please!!! I bet he will be fine after his surgery. Once the anesthesia wears off, I bet he will hardly know he had it. Neuters are pretty basic - snip and stitch.
Sherrie, I defer to the experts here about the surgery. How about a close up of his nose so we can see? I think we should have Bambi's nares done, and probably her palate, but I am scared to death that she will be too uncomfortable afterward. I know our vet shouldn't/wouldn't do it, but I don't know who around here specializes in the brachy breeds. When I've inquired, even the emergency specialists, they act like I need to get over myself.

Since two separate vets recommend the surgeries, I'm guessing that it would fall under preexisting conditions and would not be covered. I do not have pet insurance, but I know that people recommend buying it when your puppy is very young, for that very reason.
