Well, I’m finally starting Penelope on a raw diet this weekend. I can’t handle the allergies, itching, and licking any longer. She keeps getting scratches on her cornea from itching her face and it has turned into a corneal ulcer.

The vet wants her to see an ophthalmologist but the only available appointment isn’t until September 10th. I’m pretty worried about her eye. The cone of shame, medication, and raw food will hopefully correct her eye issue before she can see the eye specialist.

Poor Penelope !!! Raw diet should help- try to start on turkey or duck as they are easier digested than beef or pork or lamb, and don't start with formula containing tripe at the beginning for the same reason. Let's hope the antibiotic eye drops help !!! The cone of shame will also stop her from licking paws. Wouldn't hurt to also give her some cetirizine (Zyrtec) antihistamine ( 0.5 mg/pound once daily ) in case she also has environmental allergies. If the allergies don't go away after switching to raw food you might want to ask vet about cytopoint injections which are good for environmental allergies.

Hope Penelope does better fast on raw. I switched my FB to raw (duck) to help with her suspected food allergies and she did much better right away. She also shows signs of environmental, so she occasionally scoots and licks paws once in a while. I wipe her down every time we come in from outside with wet pet wipes. I hope her eye heals with her meds and she doesn't need to see a specialist.

Of course, I had chosen beef but she was eating a tripe kibble so I don’t think she’ll have much of a problem. She does get cetrizine too because I suspect environmental allergies are of concern. She’s kind of a mess right now. Tomorrow is the big day....first day of raw :)

I picked up the raw food from a local vendor (yeehaw) today. They are very knowledgeable and have been great at answering all of my questions. I do suspect environmental allergies so if I need to keep bathing her weekly and cleaning her paws, then I’ll continue to do so. I really do think her eye will heal nicely with proper nutrition and not being able to scratch at her face. I really don’t want to bring her to the eye specialist but I will if needed.

I'm interested in hearing how it goes with the switch to raw. Mine goes absolutely bonkers for her food. I also tried both Benedryl and Zyrtec for her environmental and it rarely makes a difference. She isn't miserable - no hair missing, no hives, doesn't itch, just the butt scoots a couple times a day and occasional licking of paws. It is so green where we live, I think she is just pretty much allergic to everything there is. :-(

Good luck!! Raw switch made s big difference for our bulldog...He still needs zrytec to help with his eye watering but overall his seasonal flank alopecia went away the Paw licking stopped and his ears are consistently cleaner than without the raw.

If she doesn't improve on the beef try a novel protein like rabbit, or turkey or duck.
