Do you guys think Frenchies like other Frenchies better than other breeds? I would have originally said no, that was a silly question, they don't know the difference (I'm pretty sure this is a run on sentence but it's been years since I was in school :). The reason I ask is that, as you guys may know, our older mixed breed that was actually my daughter's dog, had to be put down a few months ago because her cancer had gotten the better of her. Her and Twiggy always got along. Neither really played with the other; both were more interested in people than dogs but they would even sleep on the same love seat and things like that. I am starting to think about another dog. I'm not one to rush in to this, as I take it as a VERY serious commitment. So, it may be a year or two or three, or 6 months. I really don't know. Just trying to decide what route I want to take. I will probably get an adult whatever I get. Twiggy is more of a people dog. She wants to be with people. She doesn't want to play with dogs or hang out with them. I was just wondering if you guys thought she may be more accepting of another Frenchie than something else? I know there is no way to really know. I am probably going to get a male whatever I get.

It's a hard decision because on one hand I LOVE Frenchies. They are my favorite breed no question. They are totally adorable and I love everything about them. I would love love love to have a boy. I can just imagine now have 2 piled up in the bed with me..heaven! On the other hand I would like to have something that could run with me (after being conditioned to it, of course). I don't run far but 3 to 5 miles several times a week. Frenchies can't do that. I also like to hike and stuff when we are camping and it's usually too hot for Frenchies to be out. I don't want anything too big. Maybe knee high no more than 30 pounds. I also don't want anything that needs major exercise. I have a Friend that runs her Border Collie 10 miles every morning and he comes home and brings her the frisbee to throw. I don't want that. I want something pretty calm. If I go the non Frenchie route I may just keep an eye on rescues and shelters. I like wire hair. I think that's cute so maybe a terrier mix of some sort. I'm pretty much just babbling. I just wanted everyone's opinions or ideas.

Sorry to hear of your other dog's passing.

I've always had luck with two of the same breed (opposite genders mostly, but my two males were the closest and had sweetest relationship), probably because they understand and appreciate their play style and breed traits, etc...but I've also had a little dog and big dog together and they were super good buddies as well. What ever you end up choosing, I'm sure would be great! I don't know too much about other breeds, but maybe a Lab or mix? A couple years old and he or she would have settled down a little. Thinking that may be a good running buddy? But I guess they get way more than 30 pounds. Hope to hear you found a new furry family member soon :)

Love that you do your prep and really think your options through!

Keep in mind terrier breeds are very active and may be a good 3-5 mile running mate/hiker but they do have higher energy so you may need to do twice a day or something-more later.

Finding a male friend will take time but you’ll know when you see them

Good luck in the search and decision.

Olde English Bulldogs are bigger, longer nose and can be much more active. I also like American Bulldogs, they are built for activity. You'll know when the right dog comes along!

Shelties are nice breed, although some are yappy, you'd have to carefully pick out pup.

Definitely rule out a terrier of any kind if you don't want a highly active dog. After a long walk Wally is always down for the count and Uma will run to her ball to play fetch for another hour or so. She outlasts us all, and she's 10 years old. An American Bulldog would be a good running partner without being too hyper, but they are bigger dogs. Maybe an Olde English bully?

I know that terriers are pretty hyper. I just had a terrier mix for years and he was the sweetest, not hyper at all. I also know a lady who has a terrier from a shelter that is her service dog and he is fantastic,, so I was hoping I may get lucky at the shelter eventually. I want something less than 30 pounds, preferably around 20 so that knocks a lot of breeds out. Eh, I may end up getting another Frenchie or maybe nothing at all. Who knows. One thing I was thinking about is all the dogs that run out to greet me or bark when I am running. Having a dog with me may be an issue. I'm just brainstorming at this point. I do work at a Veterinary hospital, so something may come along there. It IS easy with just Twiggy right now though. She doesn't bother anything, goes to the door to go out, never had an accident in the house. Loves everyone, doesn't even pay attention when the neighbors dogs come to the edge of our yard to bark when we are out. Doesn't chew, doesn't dig, doesn't tear stuff up, just wants to be in my lap.

Wow- Twiggy has set the bar incredibly high!! What a great doggie ambassador. Can I get her to come to NC and school Daphne on a thing or two (or three)...

Hi,
I'm so sorry about your loss. I know how difficult that is. :(
I'll put in my .02. on your question about another frenchie.
Please know that I am kind of biased!! :D
You obviously love frenchies as all on this forum do :), but yet want a dog
that can run 3 -5 miles with you. Knee high (whose knees?) and max 30lbs will be a small to medium dog.
This may mean short legs. While 3 - 5 miles may not seem like a long distance for you to run,
it's a different matter for a dog of that size.
Have you considered one of these??

This one looks like it will accommodate two dogs!!
You could run/jog and take your frenchie/s with you!!
You'd get a little extra exercise from pushing the stroller/jogger.
Have your cake and eat it too!!

I already have a stroller, and I've been looking at bicycle carts. I think I made a thread about it. We are going on vacation soon and I am planning on doing a lot of bike riding so Twiggy will be riding behind me :). The only problem there is when I am off road a stroller isn't going to work. There are a lot of Beagle size dogs that can run that far, much further actually. Actually I am so Frenchie crazy that when I think seriously about it, I'll probably end up with another Frenchie. Who can resist those smushy faces???
