I've had Chloe for six years. soon after I got her, she developed this skin condition. I've been to numerous vets, dermatologist and none of them can cure her or even tell me what it is.

Her bloodwork all came back clear so its something else. On scrapping they've said yeast, but it never goes away. Currently I'm bathing her with MiconaHex+Triz Shampoo and give her diluted Clorox wash and rinse.

If you guys have had a similar situation or know what is, please help!

Thank you!

Jose

Hi Jose and Chloe,
My dog has skin issues, although not as serious as Chloe's seems to be. I changed her to a commercial raw grind and her ears and skin cleared up immediately. She is still itchy at times; however it is no where near what it was before and she is not missing any fur. I'm not sure why some vets don't believe that the food pets eat can have a huge impact on a dog's overall well being. What is Chloe eating? Kibble? What protein? Does she itch or scoot - does the skin condition aggravate her?

I think we have to assume yeast infection- you may need an oral antifungal to get rid of it. I'm reposting this from the sister English bulldog forum site where I posted this originally:

Ketoconazole (needs Rx) is more toxic than itraconazole and fluconazole , but the least expensive and very effective. If you want efficacy and don't mind the price, try itraconazole pulse therapy ( needs Rx ) :
Administer Itraconazole 5-10 mg/kg PO q 24 h for 7days, then stop drug for 7 days, then treat again for 7 days, then stop for 7 days, then treat for a final 7 days. This week-on/week-off “pulse regimen” saves cost and is effective because the drug accumulates in hair and skin tissue.

Sometimes dogs with yeasty skin infections also have concurrent staphylococcal infections, so vets will sometimes also prescribe at same time cephalexin for 3-4 weeks.

Bathe your dog with a combination ketoconazole/chlorhexidine shampoo ( eg. Ketohex, Curaseb ) once or twice weekly.

I would try to switch your dog to frozen raw dog food ( PREY model, not BARF model ) and avoid all sugars and starches.

If your dog has environmental allergies it might help to give cetirizine antihistamine 10mg daily and possibly Cytopoint injection from vet if cetirizine doesn't work.

I would also give a probiotic such as Probiotic Miracle, Proviable DC, raw goats milk, or live sauerkraut from refrigerator section of health food store etc.

Thank you both for your responses.

Hattie - Currently we're giving Chloe Zignature Kangaroo Dry. Its the only food she eats. The Dermatologist had recommended either rabbit or kangaroo and I use the latter. She’s tried Royal Canine, Venture, Merrick, Instinct, Wellness and Natural Balance. The one that worked best was Natural Balance Rabbit but it was discontinued. Now she’s on Zignature. She's a happy dog and I don't see her scratch or scoot. But it doesn't look good and She gets sores that become flaky which fall off and result in bald patches.

Honey Owners - previously she was prescribed steroids and antibiotics, but still no help. They prescribed her Apoquel but I'm concerned administering due to its side effects. Some of the items you listed require scripts. I will gently nudge my vet and hopefully he's willing to try it.

Thanks again to you both!!

Wow - I am mystified...I am so used to seeing mine itch and scoot. I really hope you get to the bottom of it soon. It must be so incredibly frustrating. I'm glad she has you to help her though.

I am sorry to hear about Chloe’s condition. I went through skin issues with both of my Frenchies. I went through allergy shots, different food combinations, and even moved from East to West coast in attempt to combat these skin issues. In the end, nothing ended up working one hundred percent. We contained the outbreaks to several times a year and combated when they occurred with combination of Apoquel and other drugs and Ketoconazole shampoo (as mentioned by Honey’s owner). Normally the outbreaks would last about a month at a time. These skin conditions just seemed to go away in one of Frenchies (after having skin conditions for his first seven years); my other Frenchie had skin conditions his whole life. Best of luck to you and Chloe.

I would definitely try to avoid apoquel if you can. Steroids encourage yeast growth. Antibiotics don't treat the yeast but might be needed for a concurrent staph infection. I really think it will help if you can switch your dog to a frozen raw diet PREY model, which is 80 – 85% Muscle meat
10 – 15% Raw meaty bones
5- 10% Organs & Offal (with half of this amount being liver)

There is no fruit or vegetables in the PREY formula. Depending on where you buy it from, you may need to add some fish oil, and sea kelp ( or raw goats milk )if they don't include that . I would also give steamed vegetables but no fruit, since the sugar encourages yeast growth.

sirjigster Any update? How is her skin looking today?
Honeys Owners

Do you know of any brands that are PREY model and ship their product to your door? I currently use a great company but it is BARF and I am starting to think that my girl is still itchy because there are a ton of fruit and veggies in the grind. I spent a ton of time this weekend trying to Google other companies that just do a meat grind. I found exactly 1 (mypetcarnivore.com).

Also, I am finding conflicting info regarding warm and cold and neutral proteins online. Turkey is sometimes listed as all three. I'm really wanting to expand beyond the duck and occasional rabbit for Daphne but need a "cooling" protein according to all the info I've read. Thanks if you can help.

I just heard of this one this week... have not read up on it yet, but the person that told me about has rave reviews on it -- https://www.bjsrawpetfood.com/shop/

Update - August 6th.

We gave cholesterols the Apoquel. Reviews have been so mixed and even in this forum we have some recommending and others not. We have stopped giving her the Clorox bath as it seems to have made her hair brittle and its falling out in chunks.

We read about a vinegar bath to kill the yeast and will start that this weekend. Also have an appointment with this dermatologist. https://www.allpawsderm.com. Anyone use her?

Thanks all for the response and the concern.

Thank you for the info! I have a boutique dog food place within walking distance of my new house and ordered from Blue Buffalo yesterday. Going to give this company a whirl. The owner of the store says they are lovely to deal with and he delivers twice a month. 2 pound roll of meat/organ/bone grind with no fruits and veggies only $6.50! That's almost 4 days worth of food for mine!
