Doggysitting for a friend over night last night and Til this evening.

She's an olde English bulldog and she has horrible environmental allergies.

While we went out for lunch she scratched her ear until the entire outside was seeping blood through the thinned out skin. I cleaned it and held cool water on it to try to relieve her.

Right now she's on 3 benedryl in the morning and she gets baths in medicated hydrocortisone shampoo.

Do you guys have any suggestions to help this girl out? Beside going to the vet and getting apoquel? She scratched the top of her head before she got here and she seems to have a few hot spots on her back and side too.

Trying to help relieve her of any discomfort since she has a 2 hour ride home later on tonight and it would make my friends life a lot easier.

I also just wanted to show you guys Rox! She's such a sweetie and we all appreciate a cute bulldog! ;)

She is a beauty. It could also be the food they have her on.

Awwww; poor honey. Good luck; I hope the benedryl helps.

cover the spot where she scratches and try not to maker her nscratch it because it will just leave her wounds.

Her ear wound was looking a lot better by the time she left! My cleaning must have helped!

She's on Acana Pork. She's allergic to grass, pollen, fleas, etc. she never had a food allergy test but when she switched her to Acana Pork she did so well for the past few months and then her allergies spiraled out of control all of a sudden!

She is gorgeous! I love her. Jax suffers from environmental allergies and once I switched him to raw (nor fruits or veggies, just meat), his symptoms have significantly decreased. And while he gets Apoquel and shots, I still notice a huge difference since being on raw. I also give him a bath once a week with a medicated shampoo.

Awe what a sweetie! I don't have any suggestions because I am fairly new to doggie stuff. Hope she feels better!! Maybe switching to raw might be worth a go?

Being allergic to fleas ... I wonder if she is also allergic to mites? By chance do you know?

She's really cute. Allergies are tricky to get under control. If the benadryl isn't helping much, they can try a different antihistamine like Zyrtec or Claritin to see if that helps. Jake is on Apoquel and it helps a lot. Good luck to them.

I believe she is.

UGH --- if she is on dry kibble, it contains storage mites which could be the issue. If they want to test it out.... they should buy small bags of food and separate it into small freezer bags and store the food in the freezer until they use it. By freezing the food it stops the mites form developing and will lessen her itching and out breaks.

I'll tell her to try that to test the theory!

She's basically willing to do anything at this point since she's having such a bad episode. Her ears smell so horribly I actually gagged a couple times at the sour smell.

I know that she was allergy tested but not food allergy tested, they were on trial and error with that.

She has a vet appt tomorrow morning, too! I told her to ask about allergy medication, hopefully they'll have apoquel available to at least stop this episode and get her ears taken care of while the rest of her allergies are at bay.

I'm sure you did this but just in case... Are they avoiding grains and chicken in the kibble?

She's on Acana Pork, she doesn't do well on chicken. I haven't looked much into Acana since I didn't want to feed my girl fish and she got itchy on the other proteins they offer in kibble, so I'm unsure about grain?

I got this right from Acanas website:

Free of grains, potato, tapioca and starch ingredients, Biologically Appropriate™ ACANA features low-glycemic fruits and vegetables, such as whole pumpkin and butternut squash that enter the blood stream slowly, promoting stable blood sugar levels and reducing the potential for fat storage.

As for chicken, some of them have chicken... but the pork one doesn't. it says the meat they use on the front of each bag
