Building a sod box?

I plan on building one if these this weekend. Can I ask what you used
On the bottom? Or is it just the sod. Thanks!!!

I used a washing machine drip pan, which I found at Home Depot. Then a layer of potting soil, then the sod.

Haha I'm assuming it would die before it got too rowdy and I would replace the piece. Since he'd be peeing on it I would think it would turn into sad yellow grass?

Yes seems like unless its large the grass would be killed off in no time...I did read how someone said to pour water over the area they pee on I guess to dilute it, but then you have to go out with them so you can see where they pee.

So far the grass is still alive, and looking pretty decent. I just water it twice a day.

OMG - you're a genius! You're one of those Martha Stewart types, aren't you?

I'll be interested to hear how absorbent this is. I know that doggie lawn has hydroponickly grown fiber root system that means I don't have any liquid cleanup. Also, what is the smallest size sod you can buy? I'm wondering if it's a huge piece and is throw some away, although it would still be cheaper. Realized they prob don't sell sod in mpls in the winter too, but the sod delivery will probably suffer too. We all suffer! :( is your puppy digging at all? That is my new problem, so I need the $5 added mesh to prevent digging now! I just more than anything don't want her to grow up only knowing to pee on pee pads, because she started in an apt! I love your solution and would love to try it! Curious to hear how long it lasts, what the switching effort is, etc! Your pup looks so happy lounging on it!

Haha more of the "if I can do it, I'm not paying for it!" types. Thank you!

I used moisture control potting soil, and haven't seen any liquid. The grass itself and the soil absorbs water and pee, so I feel like the root system might be a gimmick. We have no drainage issues. I bought a little roll and had probably 1/10 left over. I just trimmed it off and threw it out. The whole piece was $3, so I really wasn't all that concerned about it. He messes with the grass a little, but doesn't dig. He hasn't been able to pull any up yet, it's very solidly rooted. We're over a week in now (I think) and the grass still pretty much looks like it did when I bought it. As far as switching it I'll probably just pull the top sod off, which is quick and easy. If I have some unforeseen difficulty then I'll put a layer of plastic down first next time that'll allow me to pull everything at once. Worse comes to worse I just pick the tray up and dump it into a garbage bag.

Just as an update -- the grass is actually thriving. It is growing new green shoots. Not very much of it is dead or dying. I am very pleased with it!
