Hi- my boy has just been castrated, and I hate the cone I have left him sleeping without it tonight because he just wouldn't move or sleep or eat with it on; I am just looking for some opinions and advice on it because I feel like he is going to be interested in the cut and I don't want to get an infection in it.

Thank you

In my opinion I would keep the cone on as much as you can.... I know it sucks, but he will get used to it - and will heal properly and in a timely fashion.

I also read that if you keep taking it off and on and off and on too much, the dog will almost think of it as a punishment.

When Banksy just had his eye infection I kept it on most of the time, however took it off occasionally if I knew he would not leave my sight. and it was kind of sad the look he would give me when I went to put it back on, like he did something wrong

There is an inflatable cone you can get that is more comfy - I did a post in the health forum called the cone of sadness and someone posted a photo of it - I plan on getting that one when Banksy gets neutered, which is soon.

It's so sad seeing them so down - Hope he feels better soon <3

As long as you are with him, and watching it is fine to leave it off for awhile. In most cases, not all, Frenchie/Bulldogs can not reach the area... the cone is to prevent them from licking or scratching the incision.

All four of my Bulldogs never wore one for any of their surgeries and there were no issues with them reaching the incision.... but watch them... if he can reach, you have to stop him

Jax didn't get one after he was neutered as he couldn't reach the area. And he bounced back to normal the next day. If you do use a cone, I highly suggest getting an inflatable one.

Most dogs don't need a cone. Take it off and as long as he isn't messing with his incision, don't worry about it.

We kept Wally's cone on for only one day, and it was mostly to keep him calm so he could rest. He couldn't reach the incision so I wasn't worried.

Thank you all for your advice, I have left it off he seems to be fine without it on; if I see him near the area I just tell him NO!
:) he seems a lot happier without it around his neck that's for sure.

You can try Pro Collar. It's an inflatable ring that goes around the neck. My frenchie didn't seem to mind it that much. I got the medium size it ar Petco. It was kind of pricey though at around $30.

No cone of shame as Chance could not reach the incision but no hesitation to use one if necessary
