Hi all,

It's that time of year again where the dust mite allergy is flaring up as the heating in the house is on more and more.....

I'd like to try a different antihistamine, as Dexter's eyes are really watering and I think the Piriton isn't helping like it did last year. Would cetirizine be appropriate for runny eyes? Are there any others that people have had success with?

Thank you :-)

Yes, it's a good antihistamine, usually 0.5 mg/pound once per day. I give my 33 pound dog only 10 mg once a day though. You can also try loratidine 5-10 mg once a day although there's not much information for use in dogs. I don't find any antihistamine (have tried cetirizine, chlorpheniramine, loratidine ) does much for my dog's paw licking, but it seems to be good for watery eyes and nose. I also find my dog gets itchy ears, so I clean those every day or two days, and itchy skin so I brush her hair every day or two days with a zoomgroom brush, in addition to the antihistamine. Probiotics and salmon oil and coconut oil are supposed to help with allergies too.

Brilliant - thanks for the information. I'll switch him over and see how he gets on. Unfortunately he can't have salmon oil as he has a fish allergy but I've got him on coconut oil to help with dry skin. He's looking good just now so fingers crossed we make it through the winter with minimal upset!
