Hello!

We got Charlie from a breeder at 8 weeks, he's now 12 weeks. He has been a really good boy and I understand now why everyone here is so in love with Frenchies! He came to us a little underweight (3 pounds), but we switched him to Orijen and he has more than doubled his weight already. He had horribly runny stools from day one and a vet diagnosed him with giardia the day after we got him. We treated it with panacur and a week later the vet said he was all clear. We weren't in love with that vet, so we switched to someone else and asked them to check his stool again. They just called and said that he has coccidia. I'm confused how he could go from giardia to all clear to coccidia in a matter of 3 1/2 weeks when he has never been around other dogs and we are next to him at all times in our fenced in yard. Has anyone ever experienced this? Could one of the vets be wrong?

He is doing pretty well with going to the bathroom outside, but he hasn't figured out not to go inside yet. Of course, we expect it to take a few months before he fully understands, but the hard part is that he only goes in the house when he is alone. If we are in the same room, he will hold it for 2 hours or so until we take him out, but if we are gone or in another room he will go several times in very short periods. We will take him outside and give him plenty of time, run our kids to school down the street, and return in 10 minutes to a big mess in the crate. We've been doing the usual treats and lots of praise when he goes outside. Any advice on how to address him going to the bathroom as soon as he's unsupervised would be great.

Sorry this was such a long intro! Thanks for any advice! Here's a few pics of his cuteness. :)

What a sweet little guy! Love the fireplace picture!

All the poo/pee when he is alone could be just he is nervous, place a t-shirt of yours in with him when you leave to help him smell your scent -- it could help settle him enough that he just goes to sleep. As for training... they are buggers so schedule is everything... they can hold their bladder for 1 hour more than month they are old so at 3 mths, 4 hours should be his limit.

As for the giardia and coccidia.... it is possible he had both at the same time, but the med for one does not do anything for the other. I tagged a member that had a great list of health issue with her handsome little man... she may have more insight.

:welcome3: to FBN!

Welcome! He is a cutie! Our girl does the same thing at 15 weeks. I think once they start realizing going inside is bad, they wont do it infront of you

Keep being consistent with training. Frenchies take longer than most to potty train

Hello my little guy has both also. I this difficult to potty training them when they have these as at times it is direieah and difficult to hold. Where did you get him from ? It is also my understanding that to have these 2 parasites and the fact that he goes in the cage it is usally a sign of puppy mill dogs.

My pup had giardia and coccidiosis as mentioned above.

Very very severe cases.

Our first vet said that he only had coccidiosis and he almost died from the giardia. Giardia takes a specific stool test that is more expensive and more thorough. Make sure you are getting THAT test. It's less than likely that one round of Panacur alone knocked out the giardia. I'm actually almost positive it didn't. Coccidiosis is much easier to rid, one round of meds did it for my pup.

You need to aggressively treat both (which the last vet only gave you one medication, that doesn't work alone against giardia) especially the giardia. Once the coccidiosis is cleared, hammer on the giardia. Stool samples every 2 weeks (after the course of antibiotics/dewormer), also get a probiotic, it will literally save your life (also helps them hold their stool longer so potty training is still possible, I walked Titan every 30 minutes during the day and every 2 hours during the night from 10 weeks of age Til 4-6 months of age (he had bouts of a relapse basically when he was 5-6 months). But he's potty trained, so don't stop with the scheduling! Hang on to hope! I barely had a thread but I promise it gets easier!

Also very closely monitor their weight. If they lose even an ounce up their food intake. Titan was eating 1/2 cup 4 times a day during this process, meds 3 times a day, probiotic twice a day (fortiflora didn't help, we got a peanut butter flavored tube of probiotics our vet cleared to give him as much as we figured out was necessary for him to hold his stool for longer than 10 minutes).

We had T in a tote and I washed his blankets and toys EVERY SINGLE DAY. Do not let things go unwashed. I bleached my floors, washed my bedding, gave him baths daily. Don't let anything go unwashed. It will save you so much worry!

ALWAYS wipe their PAWS and their BUTT after walking. If possible actually wash their paws with warm soapy water (we just used dawn dish soap).

Pick up their stool as soon as they go, don't leave it out in the yard. You'll regret it.

With the parasites so young, it really messes up their digestive tract, he can only eat Chicken and gets sick (blood in stool) about every 4 weeks and needs a 14 day round of antibiotics. Much easier to handle now but all a side effect of the parasites.

Let me know if you guys have any other questions! I can give you my list of medications I was given as well if that would help anybody!

Mods: I'm on tapatalk and i can't copy links is there anyway to link my Titan thread here so they can browse through?

^Thanks!!! :)

Welcome!! As everyone mentioned, Frenchies are cute but damn stubborn so it may take a bit more time for them to get the potty training thing. Good luck with the parasites. Jess has given you a ton of great information.
